(AP) ? The body of the man who killed 26 people at a Connecticut elementary school has been claimed for burial.

Connecticut Medical Examiner Wayne H. Carver II tells the Hartford Courant (http://cour.at/TrQFyH) that the remains of Adam Lanza were claimed several days ago by someone who wanted to remain anonymous.

A spokeswoman at Carver's office told The Associated Press she could not release details about the status of Lanza's remains.

The 20-year-old Lanza killed 20 first-graders and six educators at the Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14. He also killed his mother in their Newtown home before going on the rampage and then committing suicide.

A private funeral was held earlier this month in New Hampshire for his mother, Nancy Lanza.

Police have not offered a motive for the killings.

New Vision African Hair Salon (Deptford, London, by joya1)

IF YOU LOVE YOUR HAIR DONT GO HERE!!!!
DAVID KAPEL HAIR REVIEW

1) I bought a voucher off of groupon for a choice of a brazilian keratin treatment, spanish straightening treatment, korean kee mee straightening treatment or japanese yuko straightening treatment.

2) I had long hair mid back length, coloured and which i had been straightening using the brazilian keratin and also straightening irons occasionally. Ends needed cutting but overall in pretty good condition considering it was coloured and straightened often.

3) I left the salon with COMPLETELY DAMAGED, OVERPROCESSED hair!!!! I ended up having to cut off at least 5 to 6 inches or more when i had planned on maintaing length and getting just 1 or 2 inches off that day! Didnt get it cut at this salon though I ran out when I saw the damage and went to a more trustwrothy salon.(which wont be named because im focusing on david kapel right now!)

4) I had gone in with hair that was wavy and my main concern was to cut down styling time and have straighter roots. I had planned to go for the japanese treatment on just my roots as I dont really like all my hair being straight just the roots but the hairdresser advised the spanish treatment and said it could be put through all my hair and wouldnt cause damage despite my hair being coloured while the japanese would. (I SHOULD NEVER HAVE TRUSTED HER!) not only did it damage my ends, it damaged my roots my hair is damaged so severely now, and after she washed out the treatment it was faling out in chunks, it was all crinkled up from being fried, and it felt spongy and sticky and was obviously overprocessed. I mentioned this to the woman and she said just 2 inches needed cutting off and it would be fine. (lies!) She denied that it was damaged and wouldnt listen to me. She kept viciously combing it and I just kept watching chunks of hair breaking off and falling to the floor. Im not sure if shes ignorant and didnt want to admit her mistake, or if she really knows that little about hair that she couldnt see it was overprocessed and damaged.
Please please please STAY AWAY FROM THIS SALON! I realise now it wasnt worth trying to save money by getting a discounted treatment, in the end I spent more buying deep conditioners and products in attempts to salvage what was left of my hair than i would have if I'd just gone to a good salon and gotten a good brazilian keratin treatment done. Id even rather have frizzy hair right now than what I've got, at least it would be long and healthy!!! I hope this helps at least one person from making the same mistake as me and if you have any more questions or want to see photos of the damage after and what my hair looked like before just message me(if thats possible on here?)?

Also, the treatment has made it take TWICE AS LONG TO STYLE MY HAIR. and i still have to straighten it! :( It was the worst mistake I made in my life.

1970 The New York Times reports that Curt Flood will sue major league baseball and challenge the reserve clause. Flood would make his way back to the major leagues for 20 games as a Senator in 1971, his last stint in the major leagues.

Senators Birthdays

Thomas Herbert Upton B Dec. 29, 1926 D Mar. 24, 2008

Originally signed by the New York Yankees before the 1944 season, infielder Tom Upton would be drafted by the St. Louis Browns after the 1949 season and would debut in the majors in mid-April of 1950.

Appearing in 124 games his first season, Upton would hit .237. With the Browns in 1951, Upton only made it into 52 games as his batting average would drop to .167.

After the 1951 season, Upton would be part of a multi-player trade that would send him to the White Sox. He?d be traded again the same day to the Washington Senators for Sam Dente.

Upton would appear in 5 games in a Senators uniform, going 0-5 at bat with 1 walk and 1 run scored, his last appearance coming in late April.

A few days later Upton would be headed back to the New York Yankees along with Irv Noren in exchange for Jackie Jensen, Spec Shea, Jerry Snyder and Archie Wilson. However, Upton would never crack the Yankees lineup.

Melvin Guillard survives Jamie Varner slam but loses UFC 155 bout

Melvin Guillard and Jamie Varner staked an early claim on the UFC 155 Fight of the Night bonus with a bout that ended in a split decision. Varner won it on the judges' cards, 30-27, 27-30, 29-28.

Varner gained an edge early in the bout by tagging Guillard in the first round. Guillard showed good kicks, but couldn't escape Varner's takedowns for much of the bout. But the most frightening moment of the bout came late in the third round.

The two were scrambling on the ground for position when Guillard took Varner's back. Varner stood up, and with Guillard's head pointed to the ground, Varner powerbombed his opponent to the ground. Amazingly, Guillard was not knocked out or injured from the move. The fight ended seconds after, and the two embraced.

?This was a very emotional fight for both of us," Varner said after the bout. "After what happened a few weeks ago at The TUF Finale event, we were both ready to compete. I knew we would eventually get in the Octagon and squash our beef and I definitely feel that we did. I?m happy about my performance, I feel that I was able to dominate the fight wherever we ended up and I?m glad I got the win.?

Varner and Guillard were originally scheduled to fight during "The Ultimate Fighter" finale on Dec. 15, but illness kept Varner from the cage. Guillard was understandably upset about the delay, leading to trash talk.

Low-Calorie Drinks for Dieters

  • What You Want: A Dirty Martini (220 To 330 Calories*)

<strong>A better choice: Hot-pepper-infused vodka over ice with an olive (105 calories)</strong> Like the suave gentleman who bought this for you at the bar, martinis can be sneaky. A 4-ounce drink has around 220 calories, and many generous bartenders serve martinis in larger glasses. "The bigger a drink, the more alcohol it has and, therefore, the more calories it has," says Stephanie Clarke, MS, RD, a <a href="http://www.thebestlife.com/">Best Life nutritionist</a> and co-owner of C&J Nutrition in Manhattan. The addition of olive brine in a dirty martini only adds about 20 extra calories, which isn't a big deal -- but the sodium is, says Clarke. "It can increase your thirst, which you may try to quench with more alcohol, and can also make you feel bloated the next day." The pepper in this drink is subtle; it's not like drinking a bottle of hot sauce. At home, <a href="http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/emeril-lagasse/spicy-pepper-vodka-martini-recipe/index.html">try infusing vodka using this recipe from Emeril Lagasse. </a> *Calorie sources: <a href="http://ndb.nal.usda.gov/">NIH Alcohol Calorie Counter, USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference</a>

  • What You Want: A Cosmopolitan (212 Calories Per 4-Ounce Serving)

<strong>A better choice: Raspberry-infused vodka with club soda, a splash of cranberry and a lime (115 calories)</strong> A little vodka, a little Cointreau, some cranberry juice -- you may as well be sipping a pack of liquefied fruit chews. And the more splashes of juice and shots of alcohol you add, the higher the calories climb. This still doesn't mean that you need to give up your favorite cocktail. "We tell clients who are trying to lose weight to have that drink but to treat it like a treat or a piece of cake," says Willow Jarosh, MS, RD, a <a href="http://www.thebestlife.com/">Best Life nutritionist</a> and Clarke's partner at C&J Nutrition. If you opt for this lower-calorie version of your signature drink, you could even have two of them. Jarosh also suggests acting like a mixologist and experimenting with different fruit-infused vodkas and amounts of lime or lemon juice (both very low in calories).

  • What You Want: A Gin And Tonic (120 To 166 Calories)

<strong>A better choice: Equal parts gin and soda water and a splash of tonic (100 to 140 calories)</strong> Tonic water -- that bitter-tasting bubbly mixer whose key ingredient, quinine, was once used as an antimalarial medicine -- has almost as many calories and sugar as soda. "Most people think they're making a better choice by ordering a gin and tonic over a rum and Coke or a vodka and Sprite," says Jarosh, "but it's not true." She recommends cutting the quinine beverage with soda water rather than ordering diet tonic (or diet anything), because research suggests that zero-calorie artificial sweeteners can throw off the body's natural response to intense sweetness, <a href="http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/02/080210183902.htm">which can lead to weight gain</a>.

  • What You Want: A Mojito (Starts At 160 Calories)

<strong>A better choice: A Revitalize cocktail (134 calories)</strong> Clarke and Jarosh say that almost all mojito recipes involve sugar (be it confectioner's or agave), and some bartenders use more than the usual tablespoon. They suggest asking for your drink with "just a touch" of simple syrup (or none at all) and extra lime juice. They also came up with their own refreshing alternative, the Revitalize, which sounds like something you'd receive in an expensive spa (without the alcohol). Combine the following into a shaker: 1 ounce vodka muddled with 2 chunks cucumber, 1/2 ounce honey, 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice and 2 ounces cold green tea. Shake, pour over ice and garnish with a lime twist.

  • What You Want: Spiked Eggnog (Starts At 246 Calories, 9 Grams Fat, 6 Grams Saturated Fat)

<strong>A better choice: <a href="http://sodeliciousdairyfree.com/products/coconut-milk-beverages/nog">Coconut milk nog</a> (per half-cup serving: 90 calories, 3 grams saturated fat)</strong> Compared to the traditional recipe made with milk, cream and eggs, dairy-free nog made from coconut milk has about half the calories and a fraction of the fat. It's surprisingly creamy, and the coconut flavor may trick you into thinking you've already added a shot of rum (saving you about 100 calories). For traditionalists, Clarke suggests making your own recipe at home using 1 percent milk instead of whole and trying evaporated skim milk instead of cream.

  • What You Want: A Kir Royale (219 Calories Per 6.5-Ounce Glass)

<strong>A better choice: Sparkling ros? (115 calories per 6-ounce glass)</strong> Because of its blush hue, sparkling ros? looks just as festive as a Kir Royale, but holding the cr?me de cassis saves about 90 calories. At your next party, pop open a bottle of <a href="http://www.oprah.com/food/Wine-and-Chocolate-Pairings/4">Piper-Heidsieck Brut Ros? Sauvage or Gruet Grand Ros?.</a>

  • What You Want: Hot Cocoa With Bailey's (Minimum 180 Calories, 9 Grams Fat)

<strong>A better choice: A hot toddy (113 calories, 0 grams fat)</strong> It's nice to have something warm and sweet that you can wrap your hands around at those post-caroling get-togethers and tree-trimming parties. To save calories and fat, pour boiling hot water (or black tea) into a mug and add a half-shot of brandy, bourbon or whiskey, a tablespoon of honey and a tablespoon of lemon juice.

  • What You Want: A Margarita (168 To 504 Calories)

<strong>A better choice: Tequila over ice with two limes (100 calories)</strong> The biggest threat posed by a margarita, says Jarosh, is the nonstandardized size. "Some places serve them as 8-ounce drinks, others as 12 ounces, and that can make a huge difference," she says. You'll always know how much alcohol you're getting if you order a shot of high-end tequila on the rocks with maybe a splash of soda and an extra lime, and this makes for a good sipping drink.

  • What You Want: A Beer**

<strong>A better choice: A shandy or Michelada</strong> Both of these beverages are easy, flavorful ways to extend your beer and, therefore, drink less over the course of a night. To make a low-calorie shandy, add one part lemon-flavored seltzer and a squeeze of lemon to two parts beer. For Micheladas, which originated in Mexico, add dashes of hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce and black pepper as well as the juice of a lime into a pint glass. Add ice and pour the lager (preferably Mexican) over the top. As you sip, you can continue to top off the drink with lager from the bottle. Jarosh says this south-of-the-border beer cocktail has other benefits as well. Recent research suggests that hot, spicy flavors may help make you feel more full and can even create a tiny (although temporary) spike in metabolism -- just what you need on a chilly winter night. **The calories range widely depending on the type and the ABV, or alcohol by volume.

  • What You Want: Red Wine (115 Calories Per 6 Ounces)

<strong>A better choice: Mulled red wine (115 calories per 6 ounces)</strong> This isn't about the calories; it's about the tendency to enjoy red wine a little too much. If you're worried about overdoing it, Clarke and Jarosh came up with the idea to simmer a bottle of red wine with mulling spices (but no sugar) in a saucepan on the stove. We're less likely to chug hot beverages, says Clarke, so we tend to finish them more slowly and drink fewer of them.

Quotes: The Messianic Character of American Education, by Rousas ...

The Messianic Character of American Education, by Rousas John Rushdoony, Ross House Books, 1995

    Page 4.

In the United States, it was very early believed that the new federal union constituted the new order of the ages, and the dollar bill today carries this proud description of that hope, novus ordo seclorum.

    ?

    Page 14.

Greek thought regarded the universe, not with the principle of discontinuity held to by biblical thought, but in terms of continuity. There was no radical distinction between Creator and creature, God and man, but rather a scale of being, with differing degrees of participation in being. Man?s autonomous reason was capable both understanding and participating in this scale of being.

    ?

    Page 15.

Aquinas maintained that the end of the universe must be the good of the intellect, which is truth.

This is very similar to Tim Keller?s view expressed eloquently in various books and sermons.

    ?

    Page 28.

Education is the cure-all for sin and for the weakness of nature.

    .

    .

    .

?Education is to inspire the love of truth, as the supremest good, and to clarify the vision of the intellect to discern it.?

    ?

    Page 30.

Methods were more important than subject matter, because the person, not the subject matter, was paramount, and the person was one endowed with rights and thus destined to receive rather than to produce.

    ?

    Page 31.

Sex education, counseling, psychological testing, psychiatric aid, all these things are added in the abiding conviction that knowledge is not only power but moral virtue.

    ?

    Page 51.

The teachers, as the new priesthood, must have their particular training which is more than academic competence or a way with children. It is educational theory and experience.

    Page 54.

The chief end of man shortly before this had been defined as glorifying God and enjoying him forever. Now it was to glorify the community and enjoy life therein.

    ?

    Page 70.

All the benefits of past cultural attainment accrue to the present without loss. Christianity may disappear or be superseded, but all its advantages will remain without diminution as the inheritance of man. Such were the implications and assumptions of this Hegelian concept of society.

Helpful to understand the liberal mind, which is happy to stand on the shoulders of Calvinism, acknowledging its debt to Calvinism, while at the same time rejecting it because it is outdated and unsuited for this modern age.

    ?

    Page 90.

Basic to his educational philosophy was the insistence that education be moral in outlook, morality, however, be not primarily religious in nature but social, ?a matter of adjustment of the individual to society.?

In reference to Johan Friedrich Hebart

    ?

    Page 95.

Man?s morality, moreover, is social adjustment. The results of such education have not been, however, new achievements culturally and advances ethically, but the rise of the holy barbarians, men who have invested their ancient lusts and violence with a modern sanctity.

    ?

    Page 104.

At the 1895 N.E.A. meeting in Denver, Parker again emphasized ?the evolution of pure democracy? as the goal of education. ?The child is not in school for knowledge. He is there to live, and to put his life, nurtured in the school, into the community.?

    .

    .

    .

The schools, accordingly, are not for knowledge or education in any historical sense but are religious and political instruments for the total reshaping of man and his society and the conditioning of the child in terms of that way of life.

It is for this reason that it is not wise for homeschoolers to focus too much on the academic excellence of homeschooling over and against the government school results. It is true that homeschooling produces far superior academic results. But this is not the point of contention of those in the government schools. They are philosophically opposed to homeschooling. So too, we must be philosophically opposed to government schooling.

    ?

    Page 106.

All this is done in the name of altruism and the love of humanity, and is ostensibly a transcending of personal egoism. But this love of humanity is only and always an extension of the diseased self-love which masquerades as righteousness. Man does not widen his horizon or transcend himself by multiplying his ego or substituting humanity for himself, but only by transcending himself in the obedience to, and glorifying and enjoying of God, the transcendent and ontological trinity.

    ?

    Page 109.

There is no escaping this dilemma of socialization, with its subversion of learning to the goals of the state, except by the radical disestablishment of the schools, the separation of school and state. The state ownership of children is the implicit or explicit fact of all statist education: ?German youth belongs to the Fuehrer,? and all statist youth belong to the state.

    ?

    Page 191.

Lacking the biblical conception of evil as an aggressive, positive and ambitious power in creation?.

    ?

    Page 219.

In the biblical view, man was created as Adam, alone, and allowed to remain alone for some time, to know his calling as God?s viceregent and image-bearer before he knew himself in marriage and society. Thus, Adam had to know himself as man alone, before he was permitted to know himself as man in marriage and in human community. In a sense, ?privation? and isolation, such as was not the case with the animal creation, was the first condition of man in Paradise and the ground of his status as man. As a consequence, marriage, the family, the church, the state, and every other God-ordained institution, while God-given and necessary in their respective spheres, were under man and never prior to him as the creature and image-bearer of God. Man is thus not a social animal who must run in the pack, and whose life is comprehended in the state, nor is he the creature of society or the state, but always and only the creature of God, and, as redeemed man, having been ?bought with a price,? the blood of Christ, cannot become the servant of man (1 Cor. 7:23), or of any institution. The centrality of this doctrine in Reformation teaching had vast libertarian and antistatist effects and repercussions.

    Page 258.

The task of the schools has become religious conversion to a politico-economic statist order rather than education.

I might add that this goal is largely frustrated in the excellent American higher education, largely because of the selfishness of the system, which makes the professors largely disinterested in students because it simply does not pay them to spend any time and effort with the students. What pays, as later quotes show, is the ability to land big government research grants. When choosing to make hires, as I recently found out, the ability, or inability, to teach does not play a role at all.

    ?

    Page 267.

She implored former pupils who came to visit her to hold fast to Froebel?s teaching and the ideal of the kindergarten. Her last words to one group were urgent: ?Have faith in the kindergarten, strive to represent approval in his essence. I believe in the power of the kindergarten to reform the world.?

    ?

    Page 269.

Froebel?not only held to cosmic evolution but saw education as a major element in that continuing process. For Froebel, the entire universe was a living, evolving organism, the unity of which is called God. It?s evolution is possible because of the law of activity, the law of action, reaction, and equilibrium, the broader application of the intellectual principle of process, i.e., thesis, antithesis, and synthesis. This process has come to self-consciousness in man; thus man, who is evolving to a higher order of being, can guide that process through education.

    ?

Page 282. Why then did the kindergarten succeed? The answer was and is clear-cut: the desire of women to get rid of their children. Educators have had to set an age requirement for kindergarten children, else they would be deluged with mothers trying to push very young children into their hands. Thus, kindergarten has proven to be in part a polite and oblique form of infanticide, one which hypocritical women can indulge in while getting credit for solicitous motherhood. The kindergarten movement was born out of romantic and idealistic philosophy and its idealization of the child. It prospered because women, drinking the heady wine of feminism, had come to regard womanhood and motherhood as burdensome, and lacked the honesty to say so. The nursery school and the kindergarten were thus admirable as respectable escapes from responsibility.

    ?

    Page 287.

The price of support is always control, and the university cannot complain of government interference when it except so readily the government support. In a day when the universities most loudly proclaim their autonomy, they are most rapidly, and too often willingly, succumbing to the encroachments of statism. A kept woman has no honest protest against adultery or claim to virginity.

    ?

    Page 288-289.

A major and insistent threat to academic freedom today is the decline of private giving to education. The mainsprings of freely given financial support are drying up as a result of the rise of statism. A confiscatory system of taxation and a policy of government encroachment on a free economy increasingly render it difficult for the university to command a financial support from a financially free population. Lacking resources, the university finds very tempting the constant flow of government funds. Today atomic research, and, with it, allied avenues of study, has largely passed into the hands of the government and its subsidized allies. The temptation grows to emphasize the value of research in terms of governmental needs.

    ?

    Page 293.

Jaspers had called attention to the anti-intellectualism of the university as an institution. In appointments, ?the excellent are instinctively excluded from fear of competition, just as the inferior are rejected out of concern for the prestige and influence of the university.?

    ?

    Page 295.

Knowledge ceased to be the correlation of mind and matter?

    Another definition of knowledge!

    ?

    Page 305.

By and large, however, the university is content to see its problem as basically twofold: the need for more money, and the need for more license so that it can indulge in that total irresponsibility which it calls academic freedom. But as Stanley Baldwin once observed, ?power without responsibility? is ?the prerogative of the harlot throughout the ages.?

Remember Peter Erdman?s comments about us all knowing what we are? He understood the nature of academia.

    ?

    Page 306.

Hitler not only controlled the most educated and advanced of modern states, but he thoroughly commanded the loyalties of educators and scientists because he understood and was able to use their myths and tools.

    ?

    Page 309.

The fiercely competitive spirit such as leftists normally ascribe to ?predatory capitalism? is the normal life of the police state. In all of this, education becomes radically divorced from learning and becomes an instrument of state and the means of social advancement.

    ?

    Page 312.

What constituted the free man in Greek and Roman cultures sharply differed from Christianity?s conception of the free man.

    ?

    Page 322.

Early in the history of the United States, the courts had no doubt that education was a function of the parents and no more a function of the state than is the begetting of children. Education was seen as an aspect of child-rearing.

    ?

    Page 329.

If the state can own and socialize our children, then it can most certainly own and socialize our property. We cannot legitimately surrender our children to the state and its schools and then claim the right to withhold our property.

    Page 332.

The future has never been shaped by majorities but rather by dedicated minorities. And free men do not wait for the future; they create it.

Ouya developer console gets an official unboxing, flaunts - Engadget

It's a little early for an Ouya teardown, but Kickstarters who chipped in $699 won't have to wait long to see what the little console is made of -- Ouya's developer hardware is transparent. The console's team decided to cut the inevitable march of unboxing videos off at the neck, offering fans a quick preview of the package it's shipping out to devs. The standard accoutrements are there -- the tiny console itself, two prototype controllers with batteries, HDMI and power adapters, plus a micro USB cord and a letter to developers thanking them for their investment and warning them of the early build's bugs. The note also cautions deep-pocketed gamers that the device is built specifically for developer use, and has no games to placate eager couch potatoes. The video shows the console booting up, and even demonstrates how easy it is to open the hardware. Skip on past the break to get a glimpse at what early adopters and developers are getting their hands on.

Email Marketing: How To Market Effectively Without Becoming SPAM

Many have turned to marketing with email as part of their online business-building, but do not know exactly how to get started. There are several different avenues that can lead to email promoting success, and sorting through them all might seem confusing. Keep reading to learn more about marketing via email and set goals that correspond to your business.

Send birthday greetings to subscribers. Include a field for customers to opt in so they can receive a birthday wish. This helps customers feel like your business cares. To maximize the effect of this technique, send a coupon or discount code along with the automated message.

Try using different techniques when you are email marketing. Books are available in libraries and online. There are also many local workshops and classes that you can find in your area, so it would be to your benefit to attend what you can.

TIP! As an email marketer, is imperative that branding is consistent. Consistency is recognizable when dealing with every aspect of an email design.

Occasionally mix your format up to add personality. If you normally use HTML format for your email messages, use plain text format occasionally. When done judiciously, this can make your customer feel a personal connection to you and your products.

If someone wants to opt out, let them do so immediately. Subscribers might think that you aren?t acknowledging them if you are still sending them emails every day after they have opted-out.

Always have the customer?s permission before you send an email to them. When you email your customers without asking them, they may think you are a spammer and not read them. Also, you will lose your chance of reaching people later if they opt out of the list. If your internet service provider labels you as a spammer you may face additional penalties.

TIP! You need to get your customers? permission in order to send them any correspondence by email. If you don?t have permission, people will not trust you and you will build a bad reputation.

Know what your competition is doing with their own email marketing campaigns. Obtain an email address specifically for this purpose, and sign up for their lists, using it. By seeing what they?re doing, you will be able to make your emails better than theirs. You should always look for areas where they are lacking, and try to fill the void. For instance, you should always try to top their discounts.

    Email Clients

Keep subject lines under 60 characters long. There are many email clients that shorten the subject to reach this length. Other email clients are not able to show anything that is longer than that. The truth is that most subscribers will only need to see something that short to decide whether they want to continue reading your message.

TIP! You will quickly lose customers if you are thought to be a spammer, so avoid this label at any cost. Essentially, everyone who has signed up for your email list will then get an email from you requesting that they confirm their subscription.

Include a coupon offer when you send follow-up emails to your clients. One way to do this is to include a link to a page on your site that displays the offer and details. You can also remind them of the money they will save with your coupons.

Make sure your title is attention grabbing. Make sure you remember that your subject line is the first content your customers will read when they see your email in their inbox, so make it memorable. This will boost the effectiveness of your campaign and increase profits.

The odds that your email subscribers will be reading your messages on a mobile device, such as a smartphone, are going up every day. Such devices have just a fraction of the resolution of a standard computer monitor, so your messages will look quite different. Learn about the constraints, and test your emails on phone screens.

TIP! If your opt-in gives you birthday data, always send celebratory messages. You can easily configure your system to send a message of celebration out on the appropriate day.

It can be difficult to figure out an approach to get started in marketing with email, and this prevents many business from taking advantage of this powerful tool. Internet marketing through email can be an essential component of a successful business strategy. Hopefully this article will help you to develop a strategy for your own highly successful e-mail marketing campaign today.

An Explanation For Instagram&#39;s Drop - Business Insider

Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom has some explaining to do.

A report that Instagram's user numbers were plummeting spooked Facebook investors so badly that the stock dropped 3 percent this morning.

The only problem: The numbers?or rather, the ways in which the New York Post and others interpreted them?were bogus.

So how did this happen, and what do we actually know about Instagram's usage?

It's a vital question, because Facebook's acquisition of Instagram has been seen as a major victory, keeping Twitter and other competitors from grabbing an incredibly fast-growing photo-based social network. Instagram now has substantially more mobile usage than Twitter.

But Instagram's now seen as vulnerable after a badly handled rollout of new terms of service which scared users into thinking Instagram was going to use their photos in advertisements. Flickr and Twitter's rollout of new mobile photo-sharing features seemed opportunely timed to take advantage of the fuss.

So the narrative that Instagram had taken a big hit felt intuitively appealing.

This much everyone agrees on: An app activity-counting service, AppData, run by Inside Network, showed a sudden, marked drop in Instagram users connected to Facebook around Christmas.

That's not all Instagram users?just the ones who have linked their Instagram and Facebook accounts and actively connect the two by logging in, sharing photos or likes from Instagram to Facebook, or other actions that bridge the app and the social network.

AppData tracks activity on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. On a monthly basis, Instagram has grown 15 percent from Thanksgiving, when it had 38 million monthly active users who posted a record-setting 10 million photos. It now has 43 million monthly active users connected to Facebook.

AppData's weekly numbers are steadily up, too. They grew by 2.3 million users to 29.4 million in seven days.

Those are not numbers you'd associate with a troubled app.

It's only in the daily numbers where we see a drop, from 15.9 million to 12.4 million users.

If you're familiar with AppData numbers, you know that they occasionally show short-term glitches, which the service ascribes to changes in how Facebook reports the underlying app-usage numbers it relies on. These usually work themselves out over time as Facebook improves how it reports app activity, but they bedevil app developers, especially social game makers, for whom AppData numbers constitute something like TV's Nielsen ratings.

On December 21, Instagram released new versions of its app for iOS and Android.

Around the holidays, of course, a lot of people got new smartphones and tablets, with new operating systems.

In its latest version for iPhones and iPads, Instagram introduced support for a new feature built into Apple's mobile operating system that connects apps to Facebook. Facebook-connected apps worked on iPhones before, but the new OS feature makes things a lot smoother.

This is just a theory, but what if that direct, OS-level connection changed the way Instagram's app interacts with Facebook in a way that causes less apparent activity on the service?

One other explanation: Instagram made some change to the app that upset a lot of real users, who tend to care about things like how the app works and how their pictures look much more than they do about poorly worded legalese.

Either of those theories strikes us as more plausible than 25 percent of Instagram's user base abandoning it overnight even as it adds millions of new users at breakneck speed.

We asked Facebook and Inside Network, the operator of the AppData service, for comment on our theories, but haven't heard back yet.

(AP) ? A Senate Democrat says he believes "odds are better than people think" that a deal can be reached to avoid automatic tax increases and spending cuts next week.

New York's Chuck Schumer tells NBC's "Today" show he's encouraged that Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky is getting "actively engaged" in talks to resolve the problem.

Appearing on the same show Friday, Republican Sen. John Thune noted a meeting later Friday among President Barack Obama and congressional leaders, saying, "It's encouraging that people are talking."

The South Dakota senator said, "I think in the end we will get a deal, but the question is the timing of that."

He also said the two sides are at stalemate because, quote, "Democrats haven't been willing to discuss the issue of spending."

Late last week, Moog Music rolled out version 2.0 of its Animoog synthesizer app for Apple's slate. Now, the Asheville, North Carolina outfit is adding a truckload of new sounds less than a week after the initial release. The Grateful Dead Expansion Pack is now available for the iPad software, touting 82 presets and 45 timbres broken down into ensemble, percussion and vocal groupings. Each piece of the add-on was taken from a February 1968 performance at the Carousel Ballroom and optimized for the Animoog platform. "We're not simply providing samples from the Grateful Dead's body of work, rather we've distilled the essence of notes and phrases in a different way to transform these performances into new instruments -- new voices," says Cyril Lance, Moog's Chief Engineer. The $4.99 in-app purchase is available now, but while you're mulling it over, jump down past the break to catch a glimpse of Mickey Hart taking it for a spin.

Chinese leadership increases Internet censorship to curb ...

    ?

    email

Chinese leadership increases Internet censorship to curb dissidenceChina?s?new communist leaders are increasing already tight?controls?on?Internet?use and electronic publishing following a spate of embarrassing online reports about official abuses.

The measures suggest?China?s?new leader, Xi Jinping, and others who took power in November share their predecessors? anxiety about the?Internet?s?potential to spread Opposition to one-party rule and their insistence on?controlling?information despite promises of more economic reforms.

?They are still very paranoid about the potentially destabilising effect of the?Internet,? said Willy Lam, a politics specialist at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. ?They are on the point of losing a monopoly on information, but they still are very eager to?control?the dissemination of views.?

This week,?China?s?legislature took up a measure to require?Internet?users to register their real names, a move that would curtail the Web?s status as a freewheeling forum to complain, often anonymously, about corruption and official abuses. The legislature scheduled a news conference on Friday to discuss the measure, suggesting it was expected to be approved.

That comes amid reports Beijing might be disrupting use of software that allows Web surfers to see sites abroad that are blocked by its extensive?Internet?filters. At the same time, regulators have proposed rules that would bar foreign companies from distributing books, news, music and other material online in?China.

Beijing promotes?Internet?use for business and education but bans material deemed subversive or obscene and blocks access to foreign websites run by human rights and Tibet activists and some news outlets.?Controls were?tightened?after social media played a role in protests that brought down governments in Egypt and Tunisia.

In a reminder of the Web?s role as a political forum, a group of 70 prominent Chinese scholars and lawyers circulated an online petition this week appealing for free speech, independent courts and for the ruling party to encourage private enterprise.

Xi and others on the party?s ruling seven-member Standing Committee have tried to promote an image of themselves as men of the people who care about?China?s?poor majority. They have promised to press ahead with market-oriented reforms and to support entrepreneurs but have given no sign of support for political reform.

Communist leaders who see the?Internet?as a source of economic growth and better-paid jobs were slow to enforce the same level of?control?they impose on movies, books and other media, apparently for fear of hurting fledgling entertainment, shopping and other online businesses.

Until recently, Web surfers could post comments online or on microblog services without leaving their names.

That gave ordinary Chinese a unique opportunity to express themselves to a public audience in a society where newspapers, television and other media are state-controlled. The most popular microblog services say they have more than 300 million users and some users have millions of followers reading their comments.

The?Internet?also has given the public an unusual opportunity to publicise accusations of official misconduct.

A local party official in?China?s?southwest was fired in November after scenes from a videotape of him having sex with a young woman spread quickly on the?Internet. Screenshots were uploaded by a former journalist in Beijing, Zhu Ruifeng, to his Hong Kong website, an online clearing house for corruption allegations.

Some industry analysts suggest allowing Web surfers in a?controlled?setting to vent helps communist leaders stay abreast of public sentiment in their fast-changing society. Still, microblog services and online bulletin boards are required to employ censors to enforce content restrictions. Researchers say they delete millions of postings a day.

The Government says the latest?Internet?regulation before the National People?s Congress is aimed at protecting Web surfers? personal information and cracking down on abuses such as junk e-mail. It would require users to report their real names to?Internet?service and telecom providers.

The main ruling party newspaper, People?s Daily, has called in recent weeks for tighter?Internet?controls, saying rumours spread online have harmed the public. In one case, it said stories about a chemical plant explosion resulted in the deaths of four people in a car accident as they fled the area.

Proposed rules released this month by the General Administration of Press and Publications would bar Chinese-foreign joint ventures from publishing books, music, movies and other material online in?China. Publishers would be required to locate their servers in?China?and have a Chinese citizen as their local legal representative.

That is in line with rules that already bar most foreign access to?China?s?media market, but the decision to group the restrictions together and publicise them might indicate official attitudes are hardening.

That comes after the party was rattled by foreign news reports about official wealth and misconduct.

In June, Bloomberg News reported that Xi?s extended family has amassed assets totaling $376 million, though it said none was traced to Xi. The Government has blocked access to Bloomberg?s website since then.

In October, The New York Times reported that Premier Wen Jiabao?s relatives had amassed $2.7 billion since he rose to national office in 2002. Access to the Times? Chinese-language site has been blocked since then.

Previous efforts to?tighten?controls?have struggled with technical challenges in a country with more than 500 million?Internet?users.

Microblog operators such as Sina Corp. and Tencent Ltd. were ordered in late 2011 to confirm users? names but have yet to finish the daunting task.

Web surfers can circumvent government filters by using virtual private networks ? software that encrypts Web traffic and is used by companies to transfer financial data and other sensitive information. But VPN users say disruptions that began in 2011 are increasing, suggesting Chinese regulators are trying to block encrypted traffic.

Curbs on access to foreign sites have prompted complaints by companies and Chinese scientists and other researchers.

In July, the American Chamber of Commerce in?China?said 74 per cent of companies that responded to a survey said unstable?Internet?access ?impedes their ability to do business.?

Chinese leaders ?realise there are detrimental impacts on business, especially foreign business, but they have counted the cost and think it is still worthwhile,? said Lam. ?There is no compromise about the political imperative of?controlling?the?Internet.?

Every Wednesday, WWE Classics and Greatest Matches team up with your favorite Superstars to bring you the Five-Star Match of the Week. We ask a Superstar in the WWE locker room to select one of the greatest wrestling matches of all time, and WWE.com brings you that full-length match, uncut.

For many sports-entertainment fans, ECW is remembered for its sadistic brutality, intensely dedicated fanbase and groundbreaking programming. But in addition to defining hardcore brawling, ECW also put a spotlight on other wrestling styles including high-flying lucha libre and technical mat grappling.

Matt Striker is one Superstar who recalls those more technical ECW matchups.

?I always gravitated toward the interesting in-ring competitors. Not so much the fanfare, the pageantry, the entrance, the lights, the costumes. I love the catch-as-catch-can ?puroresu? Japanese style,? Striker explained. ?And that brings me to the match that I choose, which is Eddie Guerrero vs. Dean Malenko from 1995, two-out-of-three falls.?

The match was both Eddie and Dean?s final bout in the ECW Arena before departing for WCW, where each would become stars in the promotion?s heralded Cruiserweight division. After learning this news, the Extreme faithful inside the famed ?bingo hall? began chanting ?Bischoff sucks? and ?You sold out.? But as the match progressed, each competitor used their extreme athleticism to draw the crowd into the drama of the bout.

?During this time, I had dreams of being a professional wrestler,? Striker recalled. ?I would study these tapes and steal these moves. I tried to emulate Dean and Eddie to a tee and I was nowhere near as talented as either of those guys.? (MORE STRIKER)

After trading the first two falls during nearly 20 minutes of fast-paced action, the match was declared a draw.

?Watch that match and see the story that these two men are telling. There are no catchphrases. There are no T-shirts being sold. There?s no cool fanfare on a TitanTron behind you,? Striker said. ?It?s just two guys in a dingy wrestling hall in front of true wrestling fans doing what the sign on the arena says. They are wrestling.? (MORE DEAN)

Although the infamously tough Philly fans had chided Eddie and Dean at the beginning of the match, the entire ECW arena was chanting ?Please don?t go? as the contest came to a close. Both men thanked the fans for their support and Eddie gave Dean a hug and told him he was one of the best wrestlers he?d ever faced. Paul Heyman and other ECW wrestlers poured into the ring and hoisted Malenko and Guerrero on their shoulders as they bid Philadelphia farewell. (MORE EDDIE)

?The ovation, the appreciation, the camaraderie and the brotherhood is something that transcends all of sports, all of pop culture,? Striker explained. ?For one brief moment, you believed in what Eddie Guerrero and Dean Malenko were doing. And because of those men and their dedication to our craft, that moment that you believe stays with you for the rest of your life.?

Play Nice: A Call to Repair the Online Gaming Community ...

The amount of online bullying, racism, and sexism being used by gamers online has reached an unacceptable level. There is a?deeply?rooted problem within our culture. Despite?popular opinion that it is simply the actions of a few ill-mannered?individuals, the entire framework of online gaming is a breeding ground for?unacceptable?behavior.

    ?

    ?

The environment in which an online game takes place would be considered ridiculous in any other context. The participants in these games, aside from small groups of friends, are completely unknown to one another, selected more or less at random from a pool which consists of whoever happens to be available at the time. Furthermore, players cannot leave the game without penalty. At any other time, playing a board game for example, if one player is cheating, displaying unsportsmanlike behavior, or otherwise making the game unenjoyable, the other players may leave the game without consequence. In online multiplayer most games impose a penalty to dissuade players from leaving a game early. Finally, and perhaps most damningly, there is little to no governing body for these?games, there is no judge or?referee.?Reporting misconduct is?difficult?and often amounts to nothing. In effect players can behave in any manner without consequence. This environment has developed slowly and through necessity. Unfortunately,?there is no easy way to fix?these?problems without risking the destruction of the online game. What can be done is for gamers as a?community?to make it known that sexiest, racist, and unsportsmanlike behavior will not be tolerated.

    ?

    ?

This is not the first time this has been said, but it is time to realize that that is no reason to be silent. Gamers as a community need to decide how we will be seen by society and those of us who are unhappy with individuals in the community practicing these unsavory behaviors need to continue to speak out. Too often the few who give our community a bad name are the only ones who are heard. A new cry must be heard from our community, ?play nice.? Racism, sexism, and bullying must no longer be tolerated and it is not until every member of our community breaks our silence that they will finally be snuffed out. There is no way to stress how important this message is, it needs to be said and said again, repeated until it is synonymous with game culture. Then and only then can we all once again be proud to be called gamers.

New iOS Device for the holidays? Download these games first!

Congratulations on your new iPhone or iPad! The first few days with a new iOS device can be daunting if you?re new to Apple?s walled garden. There are literally hundreds of thousands of apps available, and when it comes to gaming, there are a great many that aren?t worth your time, your hard drive space, or your $0.99. Wading through all those games can be tough, especially when user reviews are unreliable.Fortunately, instead of letting you spend the holidays doing a bunch of research on which games are great and which aren?t, we?ve made a handy list for you. These are the games you should download first. These are games that are the most fun, maximize your hardware, and are the best the platform has to offer.

It?s not a stretch to say that Telltale Games? Walking Dead: The Game might be the best game of the year, on any platform. It took top honors at Spike TV?s Video Game Awards 2012 as the best game of the year for its versions on PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. It?s gory and full of adult content, but it?s also one of the best-written video game stories out there, period.

Based on Robert Kirkman?s comic series of the same name (and not the AMC TV show), The Walking Dead is an adventure game, so the focus is often on talking with other survivors, making moral decisions, and keeping your frazzled group from tearing itself apart. But there are also plenty of zombie outbreak moments, too. In all, The Walking Dead is an action-packed, brilliant and emotional game, and you should absolutely play it on any device.

ChAIR and Epic Games? sword-dueling action-adventure game is still a standard on the iOS platform in terms of graphics and gameplay. The second entry in the franchise upped the game of the original Infinity Blade significantly, increasing the amount of story included in the game and regularly receives content updates to give you plenty more bad guys to beat, and in more interesting ways.

Infinity Blade II supports a multiplayer mode that lets players join together in battles to earn rewards as a group, and there have also been lots of weapons, levels and bad guys added to the game since its launch. Infinity Blade II is worth the investment and will impress you with the power of your iOS hardware.

Angry Birds Star Wars takes the familiar tropes of Angry Birds ? flinging birds to break stuff and pop pigs ? and expands them in great new ways to make what?s probably the best game in the series so far. The great thing about Angry Birds Star Wars is that, first, it continues to play on the new rules and physics added with Angry Birds Space, so it includes gravity wells and space combat.

The addition of Star Wars-influenced material includes levels based on the planets Tatooine, Hoth, Dagobah, and the Death Star. The birds brandish new weapons and abilities like ?lightsabers, blasters, the Force, tractor beams and more, all of which greatly change the formula of the game and make it feel very fresh. It?s also rather satisfying to see the cast of birds dressed up like Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Obi-Wan Kenobi, R2D2, and C3PO. Plus, if you like Star Wars, it can be pretty funny, too.

This controversial classic game has made the jump from the Playstation 2 to your iPhone or iPad. Grand Theft Auto 3 is another fairly adult-themed game, what with the ability to pick up ladies of the night and shoot down police helicopters, but it?s also a smart satire and a fun open world to explore, exploit, and blow up.

There are a myriad of missions and other things to do in Grand Theft Auto 3, which means you get hours of gameplay for one dollar. Rockstar Games has done a pretty great drop of porting the game to iOS devices, as well, making the controls feel solid even on a touchscreen interface. You can also check out the newer Grand Theft Auto: Vice City ($4.99) or less affordable Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars ($9.99) if you hunger for more indiscriminate video game carnage and complex missions.

No crop of iOS games would be complete without an asynchronous multiplayer word game thrown into the mix, and Letterpess is a great one. It?s a newer addition to the iOS market, and is a bit more like Boggle than Scrabble, like most games in the category. Each game starts with a random grid of tiles, each with a letter on them. The goal is to tap those tiles to make words, and each time you make a word with tiles, they change to your color. Then your opponent takes a turn, makes a word, and turns tiles to their color ? like some of your tiles. You win if you can manage to color all the tiles by making words out of them, and have the most tiles with your color at the end.

You can play as many games at a time as you want in Letterpress, and you can take as much time for your turns as you like. The cool thing about the game is that it?s less about making good words (although that certainly helps) as it is about using letters strategically and at the right moments to win.

Samstrong.org ? Sam Featherstone of Newburgh Hosts Benefit - WJLT

    ?

Every February here at WKDQ, we ask our listeners to become Partners in Hope with St. Jude Children?s Research Hospital. Some of our listeners give because they understand the heartache parents feel, some are just good people and then there are those who have known a child who has suffered from cancer. For them, giving to a place like St. Jude is a personal experience. No parent should have to watch their child suffer. No family should ever have to say goodbye to a person who has just begun experiencing life. No child should feel the hurt and fear that cancer evokes.

    http://samstrong.org/

Let me introduce you to Sam Featherstone. Sam is a 19-year-old college freshman from Newburgh has been battling brain cancer for over three years.

?Sam has had multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation and three brain surgeries. Despite all of these efforts, the cancer has persisted. A recent MRI at St. Jude showed the cancer has aggressively returned and there are currently no more treatment options. Sam is now on hospice care at home.

Sam was attending IUPUI on a full scholarship and had aspirations to become a pediatric oncologist, having received provisional admittance to the Indiana University School of Medicine class of 2016. Sam wanted to become a pediatric oncologist so that he could help children with brain tumors but now that is unlikely to happen. Still Sam wants to help find a cure for childhood brain cancer and therefore has organized ?SamStrong: Search for the Cure? to raise awareness of pediatric brain tumors and to raise money for research.? -samstrong.org

What personally strikes me about Sam is that he has taken a hopeless situation and turned it into good. He wants to make sure other kids don?t have to go through what he has gone through.

Sam is hosting a benefit to raise money to fund pediatric brain cancer research. Purchase your tickets for??SamStrong: Search for the Cure? at St. Jude Children?s Research Hospital.

?SamStrong: Search for the Cure? will be held on Thursday, December 27, 2012 at St. John the Baptist Church in Newburgh, Indiana.

The SamStrong Benefit will include pizza and refreshments, games, silent and live auctions and special guests. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased here.
