Better way to culture central nervous cells

Jan. 29, 2013 ? A protein associated with neuron damage in Alzheimer's patients provides a superior scaffold for growing central nervous system cells in the lab. The findings could have clinical implications for producing neural implants and offers new insights on the complex link between the apoE4 apolipoprotein and Alzheimer's disease. Results appear in the journal Biomaterials.

A protein associated with neuron damage in people with Alzheimer's disease is surprisingly useful in promoting neuron growth in the lab, according to a new study by engineering researchers at Brown University. The findings, in press at the journal Biomaterials, suggest a better method of growing neurons outside the body that might then be implanted to treat people with neurodegenerative diseases.

The research compared the effects of two proteins that can be used as an artificial scaffold for growing neurons (nerve cells) from the central nervous system. The study found that central nervous system neurons from rats cultured in apolipoprotein E-4 (apoE4) grew better than neurons cultured in laminin, which had been considered the gold standard for growing mammalian neurons in the lab.

"Most scientists assumed that laminin was the best protein for growing CNS (central nervous system)," said Kwang-Min Kim, a biomedical engineering graduate student at Brown University and lead author of the study, "but we demonstrated that apoE4 has substantially better performance for mammalian CNS neurons."

im performed the research under the direction of Tayhas Palmore, professor of engineering and medical science and Kim's Ph.D. adviser. Also involved in the project was Janice Vicenty, an undergraduate from the University of Puerto Rico, who was working in the Palmore lab as a summer research fellow through the Leadership Alliance.

The results are surprising partly because of the association of apoE4 with Alzheimer's. Apolipoproteins are responsible for distributing and depositing cholesterols and other lipids in the brain. They come in three varieties: apoE2, apoE3 and apoE4. People with the gene that produces apoE4 are at higher risk for amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, the hallmarks of Alzheimer's. But exactly how the protein itself contributes to Alzheimer's is not known.

This study suggests that outside the body, where the protein can be separated from the cholesterols it normally carries, apoE4 is actually beneficial in promoting neuron growth.

Growing new neurons

In the body, neurons grow in what's called an extracellular matrix (ECM), a protein-rich scaffold that provides cells with nutrients and a molecular structure in which to grow. To grow neurons in the lab, scientists try to mimic the ECM present in the body. Laminin is a common protein in the body's ECM, and studies have shown that laminin aids the growth of neurons from the peripheral nervous system (nerve cells that grow outside the brain and spinal cord).

It was largely assumed, Kim said, that because laminin was good for growing peripheral nerve cells, it would also be good for growing central nerve cells. That turns out not to be the case.

Kim was inspired to test the effects of apoE4 by a previous study that found that a mixture of apoE4 and laminin promoted CNS cell growth better than laminin alone. "The previous work hadn't tested the effects apoE4 by itself," Kim said. "So we started working on a side-by-side comparison of apoE4 and laminin."

Kim and his colleagues cultured rat hippocampal cells -- a model for mammalian CNS neurons -- in four different treatments: laminin, laminin and apoE4 mixed, apoE4 alone, and bare glass. They found that cells cultured in apoE4 alone performed substantially better than any other treatment. The apoE4 cells were more likely to adhere to the protein scaffold, which is necessary for proper growth. They also showed more robust growth of axons and dendrites, the wire-like appendages that enable neurons to send and receive nerve signals.

Laminin doesn't seem to be of much benefit at all for culturing CNS cells, according to the study. Cells cultured on laminin alone did not perform any better than cells cultured on bare glass.

That was another big surprise, Kim said, because laminin is so widely used in all kinds of neuron cultures.

A second part of the research looked at the chemical pathways through which proteins may enhance neuron growth. Previous work had found two neuron receptors, the gateways through which neurons interact with the outside world, that play a role in how external proteins trigger cell growth. However, when Kim blocked these two receptors, known as integrin and HSPG, he found that apoE4 still enhanced neuron growth. That finding suggests that neurons use an as yet unknown pathway to interact with apoE4.

"This discovery opens up a new target for researchers who are interested in identifying receptors that are important for spurring neural growth," Palmore said.

Application to neural prosthetics

Unlike other cells in the body, nerve cells tend not to regenerate after being damaged by disease or trauma. So researchers hope that they can eventually implant lab-grown cells in the body to treat trauma or neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's.

"People are looking at all these different proteins to see if we can make a material -- a scaffold -- that to a neuron, looks and feels like their natural environment," said Palmore. "The finding that apoE4 is a better protein to add to neural scaffolds is a good breakthrough because most people have been using laminin for the central nervous system models, which turns out to be less than optimal."

The research was supported by the National Science Foundation (HRD-0548311) and the National Institutes of Health.

Ice hockey: No. 1 Cicero-North Syracuse, No. 2 Rome Free Academy prepare for Friday night showdown

, January 29, 2013 3:14 p.m.

Goalie Andrew Ross of RFA has led a defense that's given up just 15 goals all season - (Frank Ordonez/The Post-Standard, 2012)

Before the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked teams in the state play one another on Friday night, the Cicero-North Syracuse and Rome Free Academy boys ice hockey teams must get through a couple of preliminaries. The Black Knights of RFA meet Central Square Tuesday night at the Cicero Twin Rinks. The Northstars of C-NS host Ontario Bay Wednesday night in Cicero.

??? Then, they can turn their full attention to Friday.

??? That?s when the No. 1-ranked Northstars (17-1, 11-1) visit the No. 2-ranked Black Knights (14-1, 10-0) at Kennedy Arena in Rome. The Division I, East Division showdown starts at 7 p.m.

??? RFA is the only team to defeat C-NS this season. The Black Knights did so in the season opener, beating the Northstars 3-1 on Nov. 30, 2012.

??? In fact, RFA could make a good case it deserves to be ranked No. 1. Its only loss was a 4-3 overtime setback at Massena on January 12.

The new state rankings came out on Tuesday with RFA moving from No. 3 to No. 2.

??? ?To be honest, it hasn?t come up,? said RFA coach Greg Cuthbertson. ?We?ve always said rankings count at the end of the year. That?s when you want to be No. 1. It really hasn?t been in conversations we?ve had with our kids. It?s nothing the coaches talk about or think about or build up to our kids.?

??? C-NS has rattled off 17 straight victories since its loss to RFA. Eric Hamilton and Matt Fiume are ranked 1-2 in points among all hockey players in Section III. The other member of the Northstars first line, Jesse Farabee, is ranked ninth. The three players have combined for 144 total points.
If the Northstars are at the top end of the scoring pool, the Black Knights are the antithesis on defense. RFA has surrendered just 15 goals all season. It has not given up more than four goals in any game. They?ve gotten two shutouts and held opponents to two or fewer goals in 10 games.

??? More impressively, RFA has won five games by one goal and four others by two. It?s a testament to the team?s toughness and its ability to grind out the third period.

??? Cuthbertson said his team is built from the ?back end out.? That means the foundation of the Black Knights and their success starts with the defense. It?s a group led by junior captain and defenseman Tyler Williams, senior goalie Andrew Ross, junior defenseman Joey Rutkowski, junior defenseman Nicholas Nardslico and junior defenseman Justin Hussey.

??? ?I think it?s how we?re built,? Cuthbertson said of all of his team?s close wins. ?We?re built from the back end out. In year?s past, we?ve had some pretty good forwards and counted on our offensive to kind of lead us. This year, we?re just built around our defense. We?re not going to go in and blow teams out. That?s not our make-up. We?re built to win those defensive battles, keep the shots down, keep the shooters away from our goalie. We preach, take care of our end first.?

??? RFA had to battle to defeat Central Square 2-1 on December 12 at Kennedy. The Redhawks (4-12-1 and 1-9-1) have lost nine of their last 10, though they did battle well in a 3-1 loss to West Genesee on January 11. That should keep the Black Knights from the understandable and natural inclination to look ahead to Friday night?s game against the Northstars.

??? ?You know, with other teams, that would be the case (to look ahead),? Cuthbertson said. ?I think this group of kids has been really focused this year. We?ve tried to instill in our kids that you can?t look ahead, that you?ve got to play one game at a time. When you look ahead, you?re not focused on what you have to do at that period of time. In other years, I?d worry. But with this group, I think we?ve got pretty good leadership with our juniors and seniors.?

??? The doors open at Kennedy Arena on Friday at 6 p.m. Tickets are $3 for adults and $2 for students.

Why You Should Never Skip Flossing Your Teeth

Why You Should Never Skip Flossing Your TeethIn my mid-twenties I decided, after about 5 years of putting it off, that it was time for a dental check up. And even though it had been so long since I had been sitting in that uncomfortable room, I was told that my teeth were near perfect. The thing about these moments?where you think you're "special"?is that they can go to your head.

For example, on my first visit to a horse race I won $270. I thought I was ?special' in the way that I knew how to pick winning horses. I wasn't; every cent of that $270 was lost when I went back the following week.

But I digress. This is about teeth?no wait, it's about more than that; this is about habit and remembering. After all, a habit is simply remembering to do something based on a thought or experience.

Just recently I decided that I would give myself another dental check up. I seemed to have forgotten my horse racing lesson because I was expecting to have perfect teeth, again. I didn't. I was given a bill that would be the equivalent of buying a decent used car. Ugh. Could I have prevented this? Yes, I could have. If only I had been flossing my teeth two times a day, I would have had less problems.

I'll admit, my teeth are in very good condition when I compare them to other peoples' teeth. But that doesn't mean that they will always be that way, right? Just because you are in a position where you are "ahead," it doesn't mean that it will always be that way. Similar to how numero uno has only one way to travel?downwards, number two has options?forward or back. Perhaps that is why some people never try to be the best; people might subconsciously like the option of being number one, but don't want to be in the position to have to defend it. Or maybe, being number one or the best makes you lazy.

Not flossing my teeth twice a day was, I admit, due to laziness. I thought I was okay, everything would be okay, and nothing wrong would ever happen. There is a lesson in all of this; and it will vary from individual to individual, but the overarching take away is this: floss your teeth. Defend your status. As you acquire more, or you are born with more, you are that way because others before you helped. It takes responsibility, and work, to maintain or grow. Some people might think that the way to keeping your teeth looking good is to knock out everyone elses' teeth, or take away their dental insurance so their teeth go bad.

That is not the way to go. Floss your teeth two times a day. Your dentist and your gums will thank you.

Tiger Woods Wins Farmers Insurance Open For First Tournament ...

Tiger Woods won the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines! Tiger Woods is officially back again for the first time in like 6 months. Tiger had a 7-shot lead with four holes to play, but bogeyed and double-bogeyed the 14th and 15th holes. He still held on for a 4-shot victory and finished the tournament at 14-below par.

This was Tiger?s 7th Farmers Open victory.?Despite the multi-stroke win, Tiger is still struggling to keep the driver in the fairway. Still, a win is a win is a win and his last PGA win was this past summer at the AT&T National. Tiger started his season by missing the cut at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship last week. The 2013 Masters is just two and a half short months away!

Salmonella Outbreak Blamed for 16 Illnesses in 5 States

At least 16 people in five different states have fallen ill with salmonella. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told the Associated Press and other media outlets on Monday that the salmonella has been linked to ground beef sold by two different Michigan businesses.

The businesses in question, Gab Halal Foods and Jouni Meats, are both located in the Metro Detroit area. Both businesses issued recalls for a combined total of more than 1,000 pounds of ground beef late last week.

Here is some of the key information that has emerged about the salmonella outbreak as of Monday.

* Gab Halal Foods, which is located in Troy, Mich., issued a recall for "approximately 550 pounds" of ground beef that had been sold through its facility. The beef in question had been produced between Dec. 4 and Dec. 10 of last year.

* Jouni Meats, which is located in Sterling Heights, Mich., had actually issued its recall first, for 500 pounds of ground beef that had been produced at its facility between Dec. 4 and Dec. 9 of last year.

* The majority of salmonella cases have been reported in Michigan, with at least seven cases stemming from the exact same restaurant, where patrons had reportedly consumed raw kibbeh.

* According to reports by Reuters and other media outlets on Monday, nine of the 16 people that have fallen ill with salmonella are from Michigan, while an additional three cases have been identified in Wisconsin, two in Illinois, and one each in Arizona and Iowa.

* No deaths have been reported so far, but at least half of those that have fallen ill with the strain of salmonella linked to the two Michigan businesses have had to be hospitalized.

* Jouni Meats and Gab Halal Foods are individually owned by a pair of brothers. The owner of Jouni Meats, Khalil Jouni, told Reuters on Monday that he believed that the meat may have been tainted elsewhere, as his facility distributed beef to many other local businesses without any report of further illnesses.

* As the Detroit Free Press noted on Monday, salmonella can affect people of all ages. Those affected so far range in age from 2 to 87 years of age. Young children and seniors are likely to be hit harder by the disease than others.

* Various media outlets have noted that this particular strain of salmonella, known as salmonella Typhimurium, is fairly rare in and of itself. More specifically, according to a report by NBC News, the "genetic fingerprint" of this strain has been "rarely seen previously."

* A person who becomes ill with salmonella typically suffers from abdominal pain, diarrhea, and fever, all of which manifest themselves within 12-72 hours "after infection," as noted by the Detroit Free Press.

Oil steady near $96 a barrel ahead of US data

The price of oil was steady near $96 a barrel on Monday as investors awaited the release this week of key U.S. economic indicators, including on jobs, home sales and GDP.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark oil for March delivery was down 4 cents to $95.84 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 7 cents to close at $95.88 on the Nymex on Friday after a report showed a cooling off in new U.S. home sales.

Analysts said there was scope for price gains if the data confirm a steady recovery in the U.S. economy, the world's largest.

"Economic optimism and a general brightening of sentiment suggest that the upswing we saw last week will continue," said a report from Commerzbank in Frankfurt, noting that speculative positions betting that the Nymex contract would continue to rise were at a 10-month high.

The U.S. government will release monthly durable goods figures later Monday, and the National Association of Realtors will report on pending home sales for December. Later in the week, reports on weekly jobless claims, employment data and fourth quarter growth are due.

"If Q4 growth comes in at the 1.5 percent we expect, it will have averaged 2 percent over the past four quarters ... Slow and steady is the name of the game," analysts at DBS Bank Ltd. in Singapore said in a market commentary.

Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, was down 31 cents to $112.97 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline retreated 1.47 cents to $2.8751 per gallon.

? Natural gas fell 8.5 cents to $3.359 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil declined 0.15 cent to $3.0474 a gallon.

Russia says Assad's prospects fading

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia said the chances of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad staying in power were growing "smaller and smaller", as fighting on Sunday in southwestern Damascus shut a main highway from the capital.

Assad has long counted Moscow as an ally and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev's remarks were the most vocal Russian statement yet that his days may now be numbered, although they come after predictions from France, an avowed enemy, and from neighboring Jordan that the Syrian president's downfall is not imminent.

"I think that with every day, every week and every month, the chances of his preservation are getting smaller and smaller," Medvedev said, according to the transcript of an interview in Russian with CNN that was released by his office.

"But I repeat again, this must be decided by the Syrian people. Not Russia, not the United States, nor any other country," said Medvedev, whose administration has criticized Western, Turkish and Gulf Arab support for Syria's rebels.

"The task for the United States, the Europeans and regional powers ... is to sit the parties down for negotiations, and not just demand that Assad go and then be executed like Gaddafi or be carried to court sessions on a stretcher like Hosni Mubarak."

After Egypt's veteran president Hosni Mubarak was toppled, Russia withheld its veto on a U.N. Security Council resolution authorizing Western and Arab powers to provide military help to the rebels who overthrew Muammar Gaddafi in neighboring Libya.

Moscow has since accused the West of breaching sovereign rights and has vetoed U.N. action against Assad. Medvedev warned that removing Assad by force would mean "decades" of civil war.

Russia has been Assad's most important ally throughout the 22-month-old Syrian conflict, which began with peaceful street protests and evolved into an armed uprising against his rule.

Moscow has blocked three Security Council resolutions aimed at pushing him out or pressuring him to end the bloodshed which has killed more than 60,000 people. But Russia has also distanced itself from Assad by saying it is not trying to prop him up and will not offer him asylum.

The mainly Sunni Muslim rebels have seized territory in the north of the country, including several border crossings, and have challenged Assad's control over Syria's main cities.

But Assad's air power and army, whose senior ranks are dominated by his Alawite minority, have stemmed rebel advances.

France said on Thursday there was no sign Assad was about to be overthrown, reversing previous statements that he could not hold out long, and Jordan's King Abdullah said Assad would consolidate his grip for now.

"Anybody who is saying the regime of Bashar has got weeks to live really doesn't know the reality on the ground," Abdullah said in Davos on Friday. "They still have capability, so I give them a strong shot at least for the first half of 2013."

HIGHWAY CLOSED

Activists said rebels clashed with forces loyal to Assad in southwestern Damascus on Sunday, seizing a railway station and forcing the closure of the main highway to Deraa in the south.

Footage posted on the Internet showed what activists said was a rebel attack on the station in Qadam district. One clip showed gunmen taking cover as gunfire could be heard. Another showed gunmen inspecting buildings by the track after what the narrator describes as the "liberation" of the station.

Another video showed black smoke billowing above concrete buildings, the result of what activists said was an air strike by Assad's air force near the railway terminal.

Syrian media did not comment on the fighting around Qadam and restrictions on independent media make it difficult to verify reports from activists.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based opposition group which monitors the violence in Syria, said jets and artillery also struck targets in rebel strongholds to the east and south of the capital after fierce clashes there.

The fighting came as United Nations humanitarian chief Valerie Amos visited Syria ahead of a U.N. aid conference in Kuwait which aims to raise $1.5 billion for millions of people made homeless, hungry and vulnerable by the conflict.

On Wednesday, Amos said Syrians were "paying a terrible price" for the failure of world powers to resolve the conflict, pointing to 650,000 refugees who have fled the country and the millions affected inside Syria.

"Four million people need help, two million are internally displaced and 400,000 out of 500,000 Palestinian refugees have been affected," she told an economic forum in Switzerland.

The United Nations and aid groups inside Syria, including the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, could not keep pace with the rising number of people in need, she said.

"We must find ways to reach more people, especially in the areas we are still unable to get to, and where there is ongoing fighting," she said.

Last month, the United Nations withdrew 25 of its 100 foreign aid workers from Syria as fighting intensified around Damascus, but Amos said it remained committed to maintaining aid work.

Most of the money from the Kuwait conference will go to support neighboring countries hosting hundreds of thousands of refugees, while $519 million is earmarked for aid inside Syria.

ISRAEL WARNING

The fighting has alarmed neighboring Israel, where Vice Prime Minister Silvan Shalom said that any sign that Syria's grip on its chemical weapons was slipping could trigger Israeli military strikes.

Should Lebanon's Hezbollah guerrillas or Syrian rebels obtain Syria's chemical weapons, "it would dramatically change the capabilities of those organizations," Shalom said.

Such a development would be "a crossing of all red lines that would require a different approach, including even preventive operations," he told Israel's Army Radio.

Assad has vowed to defeat rebels he describes as terrorists. In a speech three weeks ago he repeated his readiness for a national dialogue, but ruled out talking to "extremists who don't believe in any language but killing and terrorism".

State television said on Sunday that Syria's highest judicial council had suspended legal cases against Syrian opposition members so they can take part in talks - a proposal roundly rejected by most of Assad's opponents.

Medvedev said Assad did not appear to be ready for a negotiated solution to the crisis.

"He should have done everything much faster, attracting part of the moderate opposition, which was ready to sit at the table with him, to his side," the Russian premier said. "This was his significant mistake, and possibly a fatal one."

But he also warned of consequences if Assad is thrown out by force. He said: "Then the civil war will last for decades."

Warning: Graphic Porn Invades Vine

It didn't take long for Twitter's new mobile service Vine to get its first collection of porn uploads.

The app -- which launched on Thursday and allows users to create and share six-second GIF-like looping videos -- already has not-safe-for-work videos of male and female genitalia creeping up on the platform.

[More from Mashable: Vine Is Teaching Everyone This Terrible Habit]

We first noticed the occurrence while watching VinePeek, a new website which aggregates Vine videos in real time via a steady stream of user-generated clips. Cozied in between videos of snow, puppies and babies was a graphic clip uploaded just seconds before of a nude body.

[More from Mashable: Facebook Explains Why Vine Can?t Access Your Friends]

Videos saved via the Vine app with hashtags such as #porn, #sex and #penis revealed even more graphic videos, many of which had a warning that the following content contained sensitive content. Twitter and Vine have not yet responded to a request for comment.

Do you think porn should be kept off Vine? Let us know your thoughts below.

Looking for a good partner!

Hello there! I'm Sam! i'm an 18 year old female and i'm soooooo bored. I only currently have two roleplays going on and my one partners computer is broken so she can't respond and i'm always looking for more people to roleplay with!

I will never only play male characters. I will play male characters if i'm also playing a female but i won't ever play only males. I love romance roleplays, i actually only play romance ones. I also tend to like roleplays filled with drama, you know, just to keep it interesting. I have plenty of ideas, and i would love it if someone else had ideas too!

I will do girlxgirl, guyxgirl, and even guyxguy if we also have girl characters!

I can do as little as one character, or as many as five. Age groups of characters i like it play is from 14 to 25.

I'd prefer someone who is close in age to me, you know i don't want anyone who is young and immature. But i can take someone alot older than me.

Alright well if you want to be my roleplay partner just shoot me a message and i'll discuss limits and ideas with you! :)

What is it? Social Cells

Dictyostelium discoideum, social cells, amoeba, slug, D. discoideum Social cells: The slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum spends much of its time as an apparently typical microscopic single-celled amoeba, oozing around in wet soil as it grazes on bacteria. Something truly odd happens, however, when the food runs out. Starving D. discoideum band together to form a conglomerate organism. A multicellular slug of sorts, the group grows into a spore-making tower, a beacon for sending amoebae out to richer grounds. The sudden lifestyle change is interesting enough, but the real evolutionary puzzle is the cells that make up the delicate stalk. They die without reproducing, which means cells at the top of the tower can turn into more effective spores. This form of altruistic sacrifice has fascinated biologists for decades. (It appears that related amoebae are more likely to group together, so even the dying cells get to pass on their genes.) Here is an organism that is both solitary and fully, suicidally social, a nearly perfect model creature for understanding how multicellular life emerged from the amoebae. In this shot, a slice through a culture dish, you can see a progression of slugs into towers.

Sensu Brush Portable Artist Brush and Stylus

  • Pros

    Elegant design. Responsive brush.

  • Cons Not as precise as a pressure-sensitive stylus.
  • Bottom Line

The Sensu Brush combines a very capable capacitive touch screen stylus with an intuitive paintbrush that works on the very same touch screen.

By Will Greenwald

The iPad and other tablets have plenty of art apps that let talented hands draw on their capacitive touch screens. Sure, you could use a finger, but a stylus is a much better choice. Better still is a capacitive-touch-screen-compatible brush like the Sensu Brush ($39.99 direct). It's similar in concept to the Nomad Compose, as a stylus with an actual brush that works on screens, but it offers a much more attractive design and a more comfortable way to draw on your tablet's display.

The Sensu is simple and elegant, with a 3.6-inch-long cap/handle that conceals whichever of the two included capacitive tips you're not using. Closed, it's a 4.5-inch touch screen stylus with the standard black, rubberized, slightly spongy tip we've seen in many styli before. It's solid and just long enough to use like a pen, and alone, it's a suitable, if slightly overpriced, as a capacitive touch-screen stylus. If you pull it out of the cap and flip it around, though, the stylus completely transforms.

With the stylus hidden securely in the long cap, the Sensu grows to 7.2 inches and gains a slender, rubberized grip and a bristle paintbrush that works on your tablet's touch screen. The grip and the long cap lets the Sensu rest comfortably in your hand like an actual paintbrush, and the tip itself feels perpetually flexible, like it was a real paintbrush freshly dipped in water.

Sensu Brush

The paintbrush tip felt soft and responsive when I tested it on an iPad. I did some doodling in ArtRage, and while there was some slight lag in the drawings as I performed fast brushstrokes, the app followed my motions perfectly. Since it's a capacitive touch screen, the iPad's display (and other mobile devices' touch screens, with which the Sensu can also work) can only detect inputs as points, not as entire areas. So I couldn't "paint" in the same way I could with an actual brush; the point the touch screen detected was consistently in the center of the brush regardless of whether I was tapping the screen or pressing down to fan out the bristles. This is a limitation of the screen technology, and not a problem specific to the Sensu.

If you want a capacitive touch screen stylus specifically for art and don't want to deal with the extra price and hassle of a pressure-sensitive stylus, the Sensu Brush is one of the best styli you can find. It feels good, looks good, and easily switches between standard stylus and paintbrush. If you just want to tap and sketch, the $25 Pogo Sketch Pro is our top choice for non-professional stylus, and if you want greater responsiveness, an electronic, pressure-sensitive stylus like the Adonit Jot Touch is a better choice (but it's twice as expensive).

ShelterBox Expands Reach in Syrian Refugee Crisis, Response Teams En Route to Jordan

International disaster relief organization, ShelterBox, is en route to Jordan after the government released an urgent appeal for aid as an ?unprecedented? amount of Syrian refugees continue to enter the country.

Sarasota, FL (PRWEB) January 25, 2013

International disaster relief organization, ShelterBox, is en route to Jordan after the government released an urgent appeal for aid as an ?unprecedented? amount of Syrian refugees continue to enter the country.

ShelterBox responds following disasters such as earthquake, flood, tsunami, hurricane, cyclone or conflict by delivering boxes of aid. Each box contains a disaster relief tent, stove, water filtration system, blankets and other items necessary to help families live independently and with dignity in the months following disaster.

Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh released a statement Thursday, requesting international aid after 20,000 Syrians crossed into the country in a single week. Judeh described the influx as ?unprecedented, larger than any other time in the last two years.?

In response to the country?s appeal, members of the highly trained ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) are en route to Jordan to assess the need for emergency shelter and other aid.

Although ShelterBox had prepositioned its aid with the Jordanian Red Crescent in December 2012, the need for additional emergency shelter and supplies is imminent.

ShelterBox first responded to the Syrian refugee crisis in October 2012, by delivering 500 boxes of winterized aid to the Domiz refugee camp in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. By December 2012, ShelterBox aid was also distributed in Syria, to a total of 710 families living families living in the Al-Salameh camp near the Turkey border.

An additional SRT is currently in Lebanon, awaiting the arrival of ShelterBoxes and assessing the need for more, in response to the Lebanese government?s request for aid earlier this month.

ShelterBox is also responding to the typhoon in the Philippines, bushfires in Australia and flooding in Nigeria.

ABOUT SHELTERBOX USA

Since 2000, ShelterBox has provided shelter, warmth and dignity following more than 200 disasters in over 85 countries. ShelterBox instantly responds to earthquake, volcano, flood, hurricane, cyclone, tsunami or conflict by delivering boxes of aid. Each iconic green ShelterBox contains a disaster relief tent for an extended family, stove, blankets and water filtration system, among other tools for survival. Mystery of the Shrunken Proton

Short answer is that I suspect the physics is not new, but something related to something we think we qualitatively know, but we don't really know how to bound the computational errors correctly in a complicated system.

AFAIK, the QED computation techniques that are used to compute bound state of a proton (often modified ordered pertubation methods) aren't particularly convergent so many shortcuts are taken (e.g., use orders of different quantities like non-relativistic velocity, etc). By using a muon and a proton (instead of an electron and a proton), we are essentially replacing something we know more about (the electron) with something we know less about (muon), to try and compute something about something we don't know much about (the proton). Since we don't know much about protons yet, I believe most computations of the bound state are currently just assuming things about them (charge is a point source, nothing about quarks). I haven't read the paper yet, so it's hard to know what they are doing in the QED corrections.

Maybe there is a slight chance that this simplistic system (muon+proton) can macroscopically exhibit something that hints that QCD confinement inside a proton or muon isn't perfect (e.g, the heavy quarks sortof show themselves in a way that we can measure) which would be some interesting new gluon physics that is currently beyond our particle collider reach. But in some ways this might just show us that the QED based adjustments we are making aren't good enough for the real system and we need some even harder to dream up QCD adjustments and it's hard to say that this would definitly be new physics, but perhaps just new math on old QCD physics....

Health Insurance Brokers Prepare Clients For Obamacare Sticker ...

By Dr. Scott Gottlieb, M.D.,?Forbes

A?California insurance broker, who sells health plans to individuals and small businesses, told me that she?s prepping her clients for a sticker shock. Her local carriers are hinting to her that premiums may triple this fall, when the plans unveil how they?ll billet the full brunt of Obamacare?s new regulations and mandates.

California is hardly alone. Around the country, insurers are fixing to raise rates by double digits. They?re privately briefing politicians inWashington on what?s in store. Those briefings are leaving a lot of folks up and down?Pennsylvania Avenue jumpy.

What?s gives? President Obama, after all, said he?d prevent these sorts of prices. His new health law gave state regulators the power to block premium increases. It even created a federal agency to oversee insurance rates. But these bureaucrats are spectators to the price hikes. They?re mere wallflowers. Even in the bluest of states.

Their silence is the best evidence of who is culpable for the increases. It?s the policymakers. It?s Obamacare. The President is accepting the premium hikes as an allowable consequence of his healthcare policies.

There?s buzz in Washington that to ease the price hikes, the Obama team may slow down some of the most expensive regulations. This might include the law?s mandatory community rating. One approach they?re said to be considering is allowing some of the historically based underwriting to stay in place for a time.

But premiums will still rise because, in the end, everything has a price. The law?s prohibition against traditional insurance underwriting is just one of its costly provisions. Washington can try to force health plans to price insurance below the cost of these mandates. But then the health plans will simply lose money and move out of markets. To keep the insurers whole, and accommodate new rules, the cost of insurance must get re-priced higher. That re-pricing is what?s coming this fall.

This lesson was learned by?Massachusetts, after it adopted its own skinny version of Obamacare. To meet the law?s costs, insurers hiked premiums. Massachusetts?s regulators blocked the increases. All the plans reported losses the very next quarter.

This simple economic axiom doesn?t mean the higher premiums were tolerated in Massachusetts, or will be embraced by Washington. What Massachusetts did afterwards is a lesson for where the entire nation is heading under Obamacare.

Massachusetts regulators went after the underlying source of spending ? peoples? use of medical services. First and foremost, that meant taking on the providers. Massachusetts moved to regulate the prices that doctors and hospitals could charge and the kind of services that they could offer.

Rates are rising nationally because, like Massachusetts, Obamacare guarantees more free medical services while doing nothing to make the market for these things more efficient, or competitive. Like Massachusetts, some form of price controls is the next political chapter.

The Obama team can?t merely squeeze the insurers. That?s why our political elite will tolerate many of the looming premium hikes. In the end, health plans are mostly just passing along the costs of the underlying services. That?s even truer today now that Washington is directly regulating insurance company profit margins.

To try and get a handle on rising costs, the Obama Administration will start to go after the healthcare providers. The President seemed to hint about all this when he referenced the need to ?lower the cost? of healthcare in his inaugural address.

Simply cutting payment rates has consequences, or course. It reduces reimbursement without regard to value or need. But indiscriminate cuts to fixed rate schedules for everything from doctor visits to hospital stays are Washington?s standard approach for sanding down Medicare costs. The Affordable Care Act will institutionalize these same political tactics across the rest of the healthcare market.

This is the next iteration of healthcare reform. Call it Obamacare 2.0. Doctors will become the next bogyman in Washington. The target is already being fixed to their hide. As for the rest of us, our health insurance will become increasingly illusory.

The prices Washington pays for medical services will gradually fall below the rates where things will be readily supplied. That?s the legacy of Medicaid, and increasingly Medicare as well. Don?t worry, though. The medical services that you?ll have a hard time accessing are mostly the stuff you?ll only need if you get really sick.

Dr. Gottlieb is a physician and Resident Fellow at the American?EnterpriseInstitute.

Jobless claims drop to five-year low

12 hrs.

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly fell to its lowest since the early days of the 2007-09 recession, a hopeful sign for the sluggish labor market.?

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell 5,000 to a seasonally adjusted 330,000, the lowest level since January 2008, the Labor Department said on Thursday.?

Claims have now fallen for two straight weeks, suggesting that if employers are concerned tax hikes enacted this year will affect consumer demand, this is not leading to more layoffs.?

Analysts polled by Reuters had expected claims to rise to 355,000 last week.?

Economists have cautioned about reading too deeply into this month's figures, as claims tend to be volatile around this time of the year. This is because of large swings in the model used by the department to iron out seasonal fluctuations.?

A measure of labor market trends nonetheless pointed to an improvement in the labor market's health. The four-week moving average for new claims fell 8,250 to 351,750, the lowest since March 2008.?

A Labor Department analyst said claims data were estimated for three states last week, but there was nothing unusual in the state level data.?

Claims are now at roughly the same level they were in much of 2006 and 2007. Claims started trending higher around December 2007, the month that the country's recession began.?

However, while employers have pulled back on layoffs, they have only added jobs to the economy at a lackluster pace.?

Employers adding 155,000 new positions in December and the unemployment rate held steady at 7.8 percent.?

Job gains averaged 153,000 jobs per month in 2012, little changed from 2011. The sluggish labor market and subdued inflation pressures appear likely to keep the Federal Reserve on its ultra easy monetary policy course.?

The claims report showed the number of people still receiving benefits under regular state programs after an initial week of aid dropped 71,000 to 3.16 million in the week ended January 12.?

Why We Shoudn't Be Too Hard on Beyonce for Lip-Synching

When Beyonce nailed "The Star-Spangled Banner" at President Barack Obama's second inauguration, it sent patriotic shivers down the nation's spine. Everyone was talking about it. A day later, we're still talking about it, but for a different reason: It seems that Beyonce was lip-synching.

APNewsBreak: Embassy: Some Russia orphans US-bound

MOSCOW (AP) ? Some of the Russian children caught in limbo by their country's ban on adoptions by Americans have left for the United States with their new parents, the U.S. Embassy in Moscow said Wednesday.

The confirmation to The Associated Press from press attach? Joseph Kruzich was the first official word that any of the 46 children had been allowed to leave Russia. Kruzich did not say exactly how many of the children had already left, but it was clear that all of these adoptions could now go forward, bringing huge relief to the children's would-be parents in America.

The ban on adoptions by Americans was rushed through Russia's parliament and signed by President Vladimir Putin in December in retaliation for a U.S. law that sanctions Russians said to have violated human rights.

But the hasty enactment left many questions unresolved, including the fates of the 46 children whose adoptions had just been approved by Russian courts. The court approval of the adoptions had to be followed by a 30-day waiting period, but that period wasn't over before the ban went into effect Jan. 1, leaving the children in legal limbo.

Many of the adoptive parents came to Russia last week hoping to take home children with whom they had already bonded during two or more previous trips to Russia as part of the lengthy adoption process. But some of the Americans were left hanging when officials refused to turn over the children, citing uncertainty over the new law. Others had more luck, but kept low profiles, unwilling to jeopardize adoptions that still seemed shaky.

Russia's Supreme Court was asked to establish a legal framework for resolving the dilemma and it issued its ruling on Tuesday, stating firmly that all adoptions approved by courts by Jan. 1, even if they had not gone into effect, would be allowed to proceed. The same assurances had been given last Thursday by Russia's ombudsman for children's rights, but his words carried no legal weight.

The embassy press attach? confirmed that some of the American families had managed to get their new children even before the Supreme Court ruling.

"Following up on recent statements by Russian authorities, the embassy can confirm that several adoptions have been finalized under Russian law," Kruzich told the AP. "The embassy in Moscow has processed the applications of these adopting parents in accordance with standard procedures. We will continue processing those cases that are approved by Russian courts."

The first children left Russia on Friday and Saturday, a day after their applications were processed by the embassy.

Hundreds more families ? perhaps 1,500 in all ? were in some earlier phase of pursuing an adoption from Russia. The Supreme Court ruling appears to put an end to their hopes.

Russia has more than 654,000 children not in parental custody, and 128,000 of them are eligible for adoption, most of them now living in orphanages. Russia has been trying to increase domestic adoptions, and 18,000 Russians are on the waiting list to adopt a child.

Americans adopted nearly 1,000 Russian children in 2011, about 10 percent of them classified as disabled.

While the immediate purpose of Russia's ban was to retaliate for the new U.S. law targeting Russians, the ban also reflects resentment over the 60,000 Russian children who have been adopted by Americans in the past two decades, 19 of whom have died.

But many Russians have been angered by the adoption ban, which they see as sacrificing children to make a political point. A protest in Moscow this month to denounce the law and those who enacted it drew tens of thousands of demonstrators.

Mozilla reveals Firefox OS Developer Preview Phone

Mozilla reveals Firefox OS Developer Preview Phone

Mozilla said it won't be launching its own hardware to run the in-development Firefox OS when it's finished, but the company has just announced a "Developer Preview Phone" for putting the OS through its paces. It's not quite the same as the mystery device we saw sporting Firefox OS at CES, but its specs seem almost as basic. The handset will feature a 3.5-inch HVGA touchscreen and 3-megapixel camera on the outside, with a 1GHz Snapdragon S1 CPU, half a gig of RAM, 4GB of microSD-expandable storage and WiFi, 2G and 3G antennae inside. Sure, that processor isn't a beast, but an 800MHz S1 does just fine in the Lumia 610. A 1580mAh battery will keep the carrier-unlocked phone running, and Mozilla is promising OTA updates to Firefox OS to keep devs, well, up to date. At the moment, we have no idea how much the phone will cost, but the first units are expected to be available next month.

The developer handset is called the Keon, according to creator Geekphone's website, and while not mentioned in the Mozilla Hacks blog post, it appears to have a more powerful cousin called the Peak. It's got a 4.3-inch qHD screen, 8-megapixel back-facing camera (with flash) and 2-megapixel shooter round the front. A 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 CPU and larger 1800mAh battery are within, but storage, RAM and connectivity specs are the same as the smaller Keon. Mozilla may not be formally promoting this as its own dev handset, but it was still included in the picture which accompanied the announcement (see above: the Keon is in orange, the Peak in white). We're getting in contact with Mozilla to clarify, and will update you when we hear back.

Update: Mozilla has confirmed that both the Keon and Peak are official developer devices.

Finding Balance with Meditation | Thrive Personal Fitness

Post by Pamela

I am convinced 2013 is going to be an amazing year. Every year I say that it?s going to be a good year but this year feels like it?s going to be really special. Professionally, I?ve accomplished some pretty amazing stuff in 2012 , things that have laid the foundation for 2013 to be the best yet:

I?ve moved into a new studio that I adore with more space, tools and comforts for my clients.

Thrive Personal Fitness is 3 years old! 90% of small businesses don?t make it that far.

I?ve been accepted as a FitFluential ambassador, which really makes me feel like I?ve come into my own as a blogger.

I feel confident that all the hard work is paying off. I feel like this year is the year it goes to another level.

Which also scares me to death.

I tend to have 2 speeds ? go and stop. And when I stop, I stop hard. I?m usually exhausted and hanging on to my frayed rope when a vacation or a holiday rolls around. I?ve done better recently, adjusting my schedule to allow for more time to do the things that I need to do for me, like have dinner with Brian or read a good book.

But I still have a long way to go. My personal goal for 2013 is to work on balance. Down time is hard for me, much like exercise is for those who come to me for help. Meditation was a sporadic endeavor, something to do on a ?free? day. Except I rarely have a day that is free. I put meditation on my to do list but it gets easily pushed to the side, much like a workout was when I was first trying to get fit. I need a meditation plan just like the exercise plans I create for others. Here is my plan to make good on my commitment to balance in 2013:

  1. Something is always better than nothing.
Meditation, like exercise, isn?t all about quantity. If I have 5 minutes, or even just one, I can use it to calm my breathing and mind, resetting my focus for the rest of the day.
  2. Schedule it.
It?s not just about being on the to-do list, it?s about having a small piece of my schedule set aside for the purpose of meditation. I will use my planner to schedule ?balance breaks?. I?m committing to 4 of these breaks a week.
  3. Get the right tools.
I?ve read the Idiots Guide to Meditation and I still use it?s techniques to help me sleep or to remember to be grateful at the end of the day.? But I need more structure, more guidance for my balance breaks. There are 2 tools I?m using right now that I love. The first is meditation podcasts; Meditation Oasis is my current favorite. The second is GaiamTV. When I won the 3-month trial I had no idea what I was going to do with it. Then I realized how much information they had to offer besides the yoga videos I expected. They have great guided meditation videos and instructional audio presentations. They have movies and videos on personal development from experts like Deepak Chopra and Marianne Williamson. They even have exercise videos, like the Firm and Jillian Michaels, for when I want to try something new.

I am proud to say I?ve been keeping my commitment to myself and I feel all the better for it. I don?t feel as tightly wound as I normally do. I?m able to take things more in stride, not freaking out over minor curve balls. I am generally happier and able to be more present instead of worrying about what comes next. My ability to focus on writing and other desk tasks is better. All of these things are going to help me make 2013 the exceptional year it is destined to be.

Supreme Court rejects Asarco challenge to EPA rule

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to consider an appeal by Asarco LLC over how much authority a top federal environmental regulator should have in setting air quality standards.

Without comment, the Supreme Court decided not to hear the appeal of Asarco, a unit of Grupo Mexico SAB that operates one of the three main U.S. copper smelters.

Asarco had been appealing a July decision by the Washington, D.C., Circuit Court of Appeals that upheld the Environmental Protection Agency's new national ambient air quality standard for sulfur dioxide.

The EPA is authorized under the Clean Air Act to adopt standards that are necessary to protect the public health, while allowing an "adequate margin of safety".

A broad grant of rulemaking authority has financial implications for companies, to the extent they are forced to spend more to comply.

Asarco contended that the sulfur dioxide standard adopted by the EPA in 2010 was too stringent, rather than "not lower or higher" than necessary as it said was required under Supreme Court precedent.

But it said the D.C. Circuit did not follow this precedent, and instead gave the EPA an effective license to set needlessly tough standards. It said the sulfur dioxide standard may cost industry participants $1.5 billion.

In upholding the new standard, the D.C. Circuit said it lacked jurisdiction to review the EPA's rulemaking, and that the agency did not act arbitrarily.

Sulfur dioxide is typically the result of fossil fuel combustion at power plants and other industrial facilities, and has been linked to respiratory problems.

The EPA had first set sulfur dioxide standards in 1971, but in 2010 revoked them and established a new one-hour standard at a level of 75 parts per billion. (http://www.epa.gov/air/sulfurdioxide/).

The U.S. Department of Justice had urged the Supreme Court not to accept Asarco's appeal.

The case is Asarco LLC v. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency et al, U.S. Supreme Court, No. 12-510.
