Local Newspaper and Broadcast Unaware of Google Threat | Mel ...

The search engine giant is targeting the local business operator in your town. That?s the very same business operator that pays the freight for your newsroom, programming and content.?For the past year, Google has been putting on small business workshops in markets large and small. Packed rooms of wide-eyed proprietors gather for a half day of online marketing tips and digital best practices.

As a very effective lure for this ?Get Your Business Online with Google? initiative, every business owner in attendance gets a free website complete with hosting and a domain name.

If you?re near Indianapolis this Friday Aug 3, register for this small business workshop with Google and see a room full of advertisers that will be encouraged to reduce their traditional ad spend in Newspaper, TV and Radio?.and move those dollars to online platforms.

Is Google getting into the website building business? No. They?re actually getting into the business of building relationships with local business. Getting chummy and offering some digital love to the business community allows for future upsells and sales opportunities. These workshops act as incredible lead aggregators too. This consultative, workshop approach will also have the indirect effect of making it much harder for local media reps to sell internet services to the mom and pops.

Want our whitepaper on how to do these workshops yourself? We?ll share specific instructions on how to put on a very successful event that?s guaranteed to immediately boost web sales. Contact us here:?

Taiwan university sues Apple over Siri

Apple is again embroiled in a patent battle after a Taiwanese university sued it over the alleged infringement of two of its speech recognition patents.

?

The National Cheng Kung University, in Tainan in southern Taiwan, claims that it invented technology that Apple is using in its Siri personal assistant software, a popular feature in the company's latest iPhone model.

?

The lawsuit focuses on two patents from 2007 and 2010 which cover voice-to-text technology, a prominent feature in modern smartphones, but particularly apparent in Siri, which allows users to ask questions to their device and receive appropriate responses.

?

?

?We filed that lawsuit in the Texas court because it processes faster and its rulings are usually in favor of patent owners and the compensations are usually higher,? said Yama Chen, legal manager of National Cheng Kung, according to Reuters.

?

The amount of damages being sought was not revealed, but Chen did say that it would be based on the US sales of devices which employ Siri, which means Apple will likely have to pay out of a lot of money if it loses the case. So far Siri is only available on the iPhone 4S, but Apple plans to allow iPad users to access it with the iOS 6 update in Autumn, which could make matters even more complicated and potentially expensive for the company.

?

The university is now looking to see if Google or Microsoft have also infringed these patents in their Android and Windows Phone mobile operating systems.

Clinton's key role at Democratic convention

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Former President Bill Clinton will have a marquee role in this summer's Democratic National Convention, where he will make a forceful case for President Barack Obama's re-election and his economic vision for the country, several Obama campaign and Democratic party officials said Sunday.

The move gives the Obama campaign an opportunity to take advantage of the former president's immense popularity and remind voters that a Democrat was in the White House the last time the American economy was thriving.

Obama personally asked Clinton to speak at the convention and place Obama's name in nomination, and Clinton enthusiastically accepted, officials said. Clinton speaks regularly to Obama and to campaign officials about strategy.

Clinton's prominent role at the convention will also allow Democrats to embrace party unity in a way that is impossible for Republican rival Mitt Romney.

George W. Bush, the last Republican to hold the White House, remains politically toxic in some circles. While Bush has endorsed Romney, he is not involved in his campaign and has said he does not plan to attend the GOP convention.

Clinton will speak in prime-time at the Democratic convention in Charlotte, N.C., on Sept. 5, the night before Obama formally accepts the party nomination. While the number two on the ticket often speaks that night, the Obama campaign has instead decided that Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will speak on the same night.

Biden will introduce Obama on Sept. 6 before more than 70,000 people expected to fill an outdoor stadium in Charlotte, and millions more on television.

The vice president's speech will focus on outlining many of the challenges the White House has faced over the past four years and the decisions Obama made to address them, officials said.

"To us it's about deploying our assets in the most effective way," Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod said. "To have President Clinton on Wednesday night laying out the choice facing voters, and then having Vice President Biden speak right before the president in prime time on Thursday, giving a testimony to the decisions the president has made, the character of his leadership and the battle to rebuild the middle class that's so central to our message."

Clinton's role at the convention was to be formally announced Monday. It was first reported by The New York Times.

Clinton spoke at the 2008 convention, part of a healing process for the Democratic party following the heated primary battle between Obama and the former president's wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Since then, the ties between Obama and Bill Clinton have strengthened significantly. Obama has called on the former president for advice several times during his term and the two have appeared together this year at campaign fundraisers for Obama's re-election bid.

New dimension of physics research: Cutting the graphene cake

ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? Researchers at The University of Manchester have demonstrated that graphene can be used as a building block to create new 3D crystal structures which are not confined by what nature can produce.

Sandwiching individual graphene sheets between insulating layers in order to produce electrical devices with unique new properties, the method could open up a new dimension of physics research.

Writing in Nature Materials, the scientists show that a new side-view imaging technique can be used to visualize the individual atomic layers of graphene within the devices they have built. They found that the structures were almost perfect even when more than 10 different layers were used to build the stack.

This surprising result indicates that the latest techniques of isolating graphene could be a huge leap forward for engineering at the atomic level.

This development gives more weight to graphene's suitability as a major component in the next generation of computer chips.

The researchers' side-view imaging approach works by first extracting a thin slice from the centre of the device. This is similar to cutting through a rock to reveal the geological layers or slicing into a chocolate gateaux to reveal the individual layers of icing.

The scientists used a beam of ions to cut into the surface of the graphene and dig a trench on either side of the section they wanted to isolate. They then removed a thin slice of the device.

Wonder material graphene is a two dimensional material consisting of a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb or chicken wire structure. It is the thinnest material in the world and yet is also one of the strongest. It conducts electricity as efficiently as copper and outperforms all other materials as a conductor of heat.

Demonstrating its remarkable properties won Professor Andre Geim and Professor Kostya Novoselov the Nobel prize for Physics in 2010. The University of Manchester is building a state-of-the-art National Graphene Institute to continue to lead the way in graphene research.

Dr Sarah Haigh, from The University of Manchester's School of Materials, said: "The difference is that our slices are only around 100 atoms thick and this allows us to visualize the individual atomic layers of graphene in projection.

"We have found that the observed roughness of the graphene is correlated with their conductivity. Of course we have to make all our electrical measurements before cutting into the device. We were also able to observe that the layers were perfectly clean and that any debris left over from production segregated into isolated pockets and so did not affect device performance.

"We plan to use this new side view imaging approach to improve the performance of our graphene devices."

(AP) ? (AP) ? The Syrian government launched an offensive Saturday to retake rebel-held neighborhoods in the nation's commercial hub of Aleppo, unleashing artillery, tanks and helicopter gunships against poorly armed opposition fighters.

Yet after a day of fighting, the rag-tag rebel forces remained in control of their neighborhoods in Syria's largest city, said activists, suggesting they had successfully fought off the government's initial assault.

The international community has raised an outcry about a possible massacre in this city of 3 million but acknowledged there was little they could do to stop the bloodshed. The foreign minister of Russia, a powerful ally of Syria, said it was "simply unrealistic" for the Syrian regime to cede control.

The state-controlled al-Watan newspaper celebrated the assault with a banner headline proclaiming the fight for Aleppo "the mother of all battles."

The rebels are estimated to control between a third and a half of the neighborhoods in this sprawling city, especially a cluster in the northeast around Sakhour neighborhood and in the southwest.

They began their attempt to wrest this key city from the government's control a week ago. About 162 people have been killed, mostly civilians, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which does not include soldiers in its toll. Some 19,000 people have been killed since the uprising began in March 2011, estimated the group.

For Saturday, activists estimate that at least two dozen have died so far in the day's fighting.

Local activist Mohammed Saeed said the rebels have managed to keep the regime's tanks at bay so far with rocket-propelled grenades.

"The army hasn't been able to take any neighborhoods yet, there are too many from the Free Syrian Army," Saeed said, referring to the rebels.

He estimated that about 1,000 fighters had poured into the city in the past few days to take on the Syrian army, which had been massing forces around the city ahead of its attack.

By the end of Saturday, according to the Observatory, the government appeared to have pulled back from its ground offensive and was resuming its bombardment of various neighborhoods with artillery. Attack helicopters pounded rebel positions.

There were few details about the attack in the state press, although it issued a long list of victories across the country against the "terrorists," as the rebels are referred to, a sign of widespread fighting.

The international community has expressed growing concern that there could be major bloodshed if Syrian troops retake Aleppo. But Western nations and their allies have found themselves powerless to prevent the situation from deteriorating despite a series of diplomatic efforts, including a cease-fire agreement that never took effect.

In a statement, the Arab League expressed "deep dissatisfaction for the Syrian regime's acts of oppression," particularly the use of heavy weapons against its own people. It urged Syria "to stop the cycle of killing and violence and lift the siege off the Syrian neighborhoods under attack."

The group's deputy chief, Ahmed Ben Hali added that the Arab states were preparing a resolution in front of the United Nations General Assembly calling for the creation of safe havens to protect civilians and to apply further sanctions on the regime.

Measures passed in the General Assembly are largely symbolic and not binding. The West and its Arab allies have been unable to pass effective resolutions in the more powerful Security Council. China, and especially Syria's close ally, Russia, have vetoed any attempt to sanction Bashar Assad's regime.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Saturday called the bloodshed in Aleppo a tragedy, but asked what else could the government do against the rebellion.

"Now the city of Aleppo is occupied by the armed opposition; another tragedy is imminent there," he said. "How can it be hoped that in such a situation the government will simply give in, say 'Okay, I wasn't right, overthrow me, change the regime ? it's simply unrealistic."

Russia has been a key source of support for Syria, although Moscow officials in recent months have said they are simply taking a more even-handed approach while the West offers support to the rebels.

French President Francois Hollande even chided Russia and China on Saturday, asking them to "take into consideration ... that it will be chaos and civil war if at some moment Assad isn't stopped."

It's been a difficult two weeks for the Syrian government, with assaults on its two main cities, a bomb that killed four top security officials and a string of high-profile defections.

The country's military apparatus, though, has remained intact and continues to crush the opposition's remnants in Damascus and its outskirts.

If they really try to make a stand in Aleppo, the rebels risk being annihilated by superior firepower, and may instead withdraw to preserve their forces as they did in Damascus last week.

Italy welcomed Friday's release of two Italian electrical engineers, who had been captured eight days ago by militants.

Domenico Tedeschi and Oriano Cantani, who worked on power plants, told reporters in Damascus that they had been kidnapped by five or six masked men who intercepted their car as they drove to the airport. They were later rescued by the Syrian army.

Amid the fighting, three Syrian athletes took part in the first day of competition in London's Olympic games in swimming, shooting and boxing.

All were defeated, including Wessam Slama, a bantam weight boxer who was one of Syria's better medal hopes.

The team's leader, Maher Khayata, whose family is currently trapped by the fighting in Aleppo, said there thoughts were always on the situation at home.

"We would like to return with an Olympic medal," he told The Associated Press, "but what we want more is to return to our homeland with the news that fighting has stopped and nobody is being killed anymore."

Motorola Xoom WiFi Jelly Bean upgrade arriving for regular users

It looks like that test period was pretty short, as many Motorola Xoom WiFi owners who aren't in the select test group are reporting receiving OTA updates to Android 4.1.1 on their tablets. That makes the Xoom the first 10-inch tablet to see Jelly Bean, and the first around these parts officially rocking it without Nexus in the nametag. We've already seen a changelog so assuming you have one of the slates, it's probably time to mash that check for updates button.

Skechers' Loss Narrows in 2Q - Zacks.com

Skechers USA Inc. (SKX - Analyst Report), which has lately been grappling with the clearance of its excess toning inventory, is now showing signs of stability as evident by its better-than-expected second-quarter 2012 results.

The company delivered a quarterly loss of 4 cents a share that fared far better than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of loss of 12 cents, and showed a substantial improvement from a loss of 62 cents in the year-ago quarter.

With more emphasis on a new line of products, cost containment efforts, inventory management and margin improvement, the company anticipates returning to profitability in the second half of fiscal 2012, and sustaining the momentum in 2013 and thereafter.?

Sales

Skechers, which competes with Deckers Outdoor Corporation (DECK - Analyst Report) and Nike Inc. (NKE - Analyst Report), stated that total net sales for the quarter dropped 11.6% to $384 million from the prior-year quarter, reflecting lower sales across domestic and international wholesale channel. These were partially offset by increased sales from new stores and Performance lines. Moreover, total revenue came ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $373 million.

The domestic wholesale business tumbled 18%, reflecting a sales decline in toning and non-Skechers branded product.

International wholesale business experienced a decline of 16%, reflecting a difficult comparison due to strong sales witnessed in the prior-year quarter on account of offloading toning inventory and transition to lower-priced products from the toning category. ?

A challenging economic climate in Europe, the transition of business in Japan from distributor-operated business to a company-owned subsidiary, and restructuring of Brazilian business also adversely impacted the business. Management expects to witness year-over-year growth in Japan in the second half of 2012, and hinted that Japan will be accretive to the company?s international business in 2013.

On a combined basis, retail business sales grew 5%. Domestic retail sales increased 6% due to the addition of 33 new stores, while comparable-store sales fell 3.4%. International retail sales increased 3%, whereas comparable-store sales dropped 6.7%.

The company?s licensing division has been another source of revenue, whereby the company licenses its name and images. The company generated $1.6 million in revenue during the quarter from its licensing affiliates, which include apparel, eye wear, watches, backpacks, and stocks.

Management hinted that Li & Fung, one of the leading attire and accessories manufacturers, will launch fitness apparel for both men and women under the Skechers? brand in 2012. This will open up another important source for revenue.

Margins

The quarter marked a significant improvement in gross profit, which increased 19.5% to $171.3 million, reflecting cost containment efforts. Moreover, gross margin expanded by a whooping 1160 basis points to 44.6% attributable to an increase in full-price products in the market coupled with enhanced inventory and strong product sales at retail stores. The company stated that average price per pair increased 8.4% during the quarter in the domestic wholesale segment.

The company reported a loss from operations of $1.5 million, a sharp improvement from a loss of $48.2 million witnessed in the year-ago quarter. The improvement reflects a 26.4% and 3.1% decline in selling expenses and general and administrative expenses, respectively.?

Stores Update

During the quarter, Skechers opened 6 domestic stores and 1 international store in Chile, and closed 2 stores bringing the total company-owned Skechers retail stores count to 344. So far in the third quarter, the company has opened 1 concept stores in Chile and plans to open 5 to 7 additional locations over the remaining year. Notably, Skechers concept stores registered a 4% increase in comparable-store sales during the quarter.

The company at the end of the quarter operated 98 outlets under joint venture countries in Asia, including stores operated by licensees, and 219 additional distributor-owned or licensed Skechers retail stores worldwide. During the quarter, Skechers opened 18 Skechers stores, including one each in Philippines, Thailand, Serbia, Jordan, Venezuela and Guam. In Mexico, Malaysia and Australia, the company opened two stores each coupled with six in South Korea. Moreover, the company closed two stores in South Korea and one in China.

Strategic Initiatives

Management remains committed to focus on new lines of products, such as ?Skechers GOrun? and ?Skechers GOwalk,? opening of additional Skechers stores and increasing distribution channels with the development of international distribution agreements to improve its sales and profitability.

Moreover, international business remains a significant growth driver for the company?s sales. Management projects international sales to pick up in the back half of the year. Skechers expects to double its company-owned subsidiary business in Japan over the next 3 to 5 years.

Skechers, through its distribution networks, subsidiaries and joint ventures, is poised to enhance its global reach in the footwear market. Skechers? joint ventures in Asia are portraying improvement with growing operations in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia.

The company is trying every means to reposition itself for 2012 and beyond. These include lowering of selling and marketing expenses, streamlining inventory and new product offerings.

Other Financial Aspects

Skechers has been right-sizing its inventory. Consequently, total inventories at the end of the quarter were $258.1 million, reflecting a decrease of $67.7 million from the year-ago quarter.

Skechers portrays a healthy balance sheet with cash and cash equivalents of $374.2 million, long-term debt of $71.3 million and shareholders? equity of $853.3 million, excluding non-controlling interest of $40.7 million at the end of the quarter. Capital expenditures for the quarter were approximately $11 million.

Currently, we maintain a long-term ?Outperform? recommendation on the stock. Moreover, Skechers holds a Zacks #1 Rank that translates into a short-term ?Strong Buy? rating.

Can we feed 9 billion people by 2050 or will we starve?

The question of food security in the world, on account of galloping population growth, seemed to be one of the most pressing concerns at the recently concluded ESOF 2012 (Euroscience Open Forum) in Dublin.

By 2050 the global population is expected to reach 9 billion with the majority of this increase in our part of the developing world ? in Asia. In order to feed this massive number of mouths, speakers at the forum indicated that a huge rise in food production of about 50% was required. The question in everyone?s mind was, if we cant feed the starving 1 billion today how can we ramp up for the increased numbers in 2050?

Speaking to Prof Jonathan Jones FRS of Sainsbury Lab, Norwich UK, one of the foremost experts involved in the study of meeting the challenge of tackling global hunger, he said that researchers have identified many simple methods of matching the demand for food as it must match the supply, and soon the world will face the ?perfect storm? of food insecurity if we do not tackle the situation sensibly.

?Improved agronomy could make a big contribution. Increasing population and consumption are placing unprecedented demands on agriculture and natural resources. Today, approximately a billion people are chronically malnourished while our agricultural systems are concurrently degrading land, water, biodiversity and climate on a global scale. To meet the world?s future food security and sustainability needs, food production must grow substantially while, at the same time, agriculture?s environmental footprint must shrink dramatically.? He shared his study which analysed solutions to this dilemma, by showing that tremendous progress could be made by halting agricultural expansion, closing ?yield gaps? on underperforming lands, increasing cropping efficiency, shifting diets and most of all, reducing waste. ?Together, these strategies could double food production while greatly reducing the environmental impacts of agriculture,? explained Jones.

Contemporary agriculture faces enormous challenges today, reveals Jones. Even with recent productivity gains, roughly one in seven people lack access to food or are chronically malnourished, stemming from unabated poverty and mounting food prices. Unfortunately, the situation may worsen as food prices are the result of market speculation, bioenergy crop expansion and climatic disturbances. Even if we solve these food access challenges, much more crop production will probably be needed to guarantee future food security. Recent studies suggest that production would need to roughly double to keep pace with projected demands from population growth, dietary changes, especially with changes in meat consumption, and increasing bio-energy use, unless there are dramatic changes in agricultural consumption patterns.

Compounding this challenge, agriculture must also address tremendous environmental concerns. ?Agriculture is now a dominant force behind many environmental threats,? said Jones, ?including climate change, biodiversity loss and degradation of land and freshwater?. In fact, agriculture is a major force driving the environment beyond the ??planetary boundaries??. Looking forward, we face one of the greatest challenges of the twenty-first century: meeting society?s growing food needs while simultaneously reducing agriculture?s environmental harm of the planet.

Using new geospatial data and models, Jones has evaluated how new approaches to agriculture could benefit both food production and environmental sustainability. ?Our analysis focuses on the agronomic and environmental aspects of these challenges, and leaves a richer discussion of associated social, economic and cultural issues to future work,? he said.

Until recently, the scientific community could not measure, monitor and analyse the agriculture, food, environment system?s complex linkages at the global scale, says Jones.

?Today, however, we have new data that characterize worldwide patterns and trends in agriculture and the environment. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, croplands cover 1.53 billion hectares (about 12% of Earth?s ice-free land), while pastures cover another 3.38 billion hectares (about 26% of Earth?s ice-free land). Altogether, agriculture occupies about 38% of Earth?s terrestrial surface?the largest use of land on the planet. These areas comprise the land best suited for farming: much of the rest is covered by deserts, mountains, tundra, cities, ecological reserves and other lands unsuitable for agriculture.?

Studies show that between 1985 and 2005 the world?s fields and pastures expanded by 154 million hectares (about 3%). But this slow net increase includes significant expansion in the tropics, as well as little change or a decrease in the temperate zone. The result is a net redistribution of agricultural land towards the tropics, with implications for food production, food security and the environment.

Crop production across the world has increased substantially in recent decades. Looking at the figures of common crop groups, which include cereals, oilseeds, fruits and vegetables, it has been noticed that crop production has increased by 47% between 1985 and 2005. However, considering all 174 crops tracked by the UN FAO, researchers found that global crop production increased by only 28% during that time.

This 28% gain in production occurred as cropland area increased marginally by 2.4%, suggesting a 25%increase in yield. However, cropland area that was harvested increased by about 7% between 1985 and 2005?nearly three times the change in cropland area, owing to increased multiple cropping, fewer crop failures, and less land left fallow. Accounting for the increase in harvested land, average global crop yields increased by only 20% between 1985 and 2005, substantially less than the often-cited 47% production increase for selected crop groups, indicating that yields are not rising as quickly as before.

It was also found that measuring by aggregate did not reveal trends in individual crops or crop groups. For example, cereal crops decreased in harvested area by 3.6% between 1985 and 2005, yet their total production increased by 29%, reflecting a 34% increase in yields per hectare. Oil crops, on the other hand, showed large increases in both harvested area (43%) and yield (57%), resulting in a 125% increase in total production. While most crops increased production between 1985 and 2005, fodder crops did not: on average, they saw an 18% production drop as a 26% loss in harvested area overrode an 11% increase in yields.

Another important point noted was that the allocation of crops to non-food uses, including animal feed, seed, bio-energy and other industrial products, affects the amount of food available to the world. Globally, only 62% of crop is allocated to human food, versus 35% to animal feed, which produces human food indirectly, as meat and dairy products and 3% for bio-energy, seed and other industrial products.

It was also found that a striking disparity exists between regions that primarily grow crops for direct human consumption and those that produce crops for other uses. North America and Europe devote only about 40% of their croplands to direct food production, whereas Africa and Asia allocate typically over 80% of their cropland to food crops. Extremes range from the Upper Midwestern USA with less than 25% to South Asia with over 90%.

?So,? Jones said, ?as we face the twin challenges of feeding a growing world, while charting a more environmentally sustainable path, the amount of land and other resources, devoted to animal-based agriculture, merits critical evaluation?. For example, adding croplands devoted to animal feed (about 350 million hectares) to pasture and grazing lands (3.38 billion hectares), we find the land devoted to raising animals totals 3.73 billion hectareswhich is,75% of the world?s agricultural land.

The study also noted that, meat and dairy production can either add to or subtract from the world?s food supply. Grazing systems, especially on pastures unsuitable for other food production, and mixed crop?livestock systems can add calories and protein to the world and improve economic conditions and food security in many regions. However, using highly productive croplands to produce animal feed, no matter how efficiently, represents a net drain on the world?s potential food supply.

So according to Jones, the environmental impacts of agriculture included those caused by expansion, when croplands and pastures extend into new areas, replacing natural ecosystems and those caused by intensification, often through the use of irrigation, fertilizers, biocides and mechanization. Agricultural expansion has had tremendous impacts on habitats, biodiversity, carbon storage and soil conditions. In fact, worldwide agriculture had already cleared or converted 70% of the grassland, 50% of the savanna, 45% of the temperate deciduous forest, and 27% of the tropical forest biome.

?Today? said Jones, ?agriculture is mainly expanding in the tropics, where it is estimated that about 80% of new croplands are replacing forests?. This expansion is worrisome, given that tropical forests are rich reservoirs of biodiversity and key ecosystem services. Clearing tropical forests is also a major source of greenhouse gas emissions and is estimated to release around 1.131015 grams of carbon per year, or about 12% of total anthropogenic CO2 emissions28. Slowing or halting expansion of agriculture in the tropics, will reduce carbon emissions as well as losses of biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Photo: Neil Mathew

Agricultural intensification has dramatically increased in recent decades, outstripping rates of agricultural expansion, and has been responsible for most of the yield increases of the past few decades. In the past 50 years, the world?s irrigated cropland area roughly doubled, while global fertilizer use increased by 500%, with over 800% for nitrogen alone. Intensification has also caused water degradation, increased energy consumption, and widespread pollution.

Of particular concern is that some 70% of global freshwater are devoted to irrigation. Furthermore, rain-fed agriculture is the world?s largest user of water13,38. In addition, fertilizer use, manure application, and leguminous crops, which fix nitrogen in the soil, have dramatically disrupted global nitrogen and phosphorus cycles, with associated impacts on water quality, aquatic ecosystems and marine fisheries. Both agricultural expansion and intensification are also major contributors to climate change. Agriculture is responsible for 30?35% of global greenhouse gas emissions, largely from tropical deforestation, methane emissions from livestock and rice cultivation, and nitrous oxide emissions from fertilized soils.

Today, humans are farming more of the planet than ever, with higher resource intensity and staggering environmental impacts, while diverting an increasing fraction of crops to animals, bio-fuels and other non-food uses. Meanwhile, almost a billion people are chronically hungry. The requirements of current and future generations demand that we transform agriculture to meet the twin challenges of food security and environmental sustainability.

Prof. Jones neatly summed up his analysis which demonstrates that four core strategies can meet future food production needs and environmental challenges if deployed simultaneously. Adding them together, they increase global food availability by 100?180%, meeting projected demands while lowering greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity losses, water use and water pollution. However, all four strategies are needed to meet our global food production and environmental goals; no single strategy is sufficient.

Specific land use, agricultural and food system tactics must be developed and deployed. Fortunately, many such tactics already exist, including precision agriculture, drip irrigation, organic soil remedies, buffer strips and wetland restoration, new crop varieties that reduce needs for water and fertilizer, perennial grains and tree-cropping systems, and paying farmers for environmental services. However, deploying these tactics effectively around the world requires numerous economic and governance challenges to be overcome. For example, reforming global trade policies, including eliminating price-distorting subsidies and tariffs, will be vital to achieving the goals.

Finally to develop improved land use and agricultural practices, Jones suggested the following guidelines:

(1) Solutions should focus on critical biophysical and economic ?leverage points? in agricultural systems, where major improvements in food production or environmental performance may be achieved with the least effort and cost.

(2) New practices must also increase the resilience of the food system. High-efficiency, industrialized agriculture has many benefits, but it is vulnerable to disasters, including climatic disturbances, new diseases and economic calamities.

(3) Agricultural activities have many costs and benefits, but methods of evaluating the trade-offs are still poorly developed. We need better data and decision support tools to improve management decisions, productivity and environmental stewardship.

(4) The search for agricultural solutions should remain technology neutral.
There are multiple paths to improving the production, food security and environmental performance of agriculture, and we should not be locked into a single approach.

The challenges facing agriculture today said Jones are quite unlike anything we have experienced before, and they require revolutionary approaches to solving food production and sustainability problems.

In short, new agricultural systems must deliver more human value, to those who need it most, with the least environmental harm. That way we can ensure the 9 billion of us do not starve in 2050.

Top 5 Advantages Of Unsecured Debt Consolidation | YodZiaN.CoM ...

Debt consolidation is the process where multiple loans are replaced with only one loan that has a lower monthly payment scheme but a longer repayment period. There are basically two types of debt consolidation; secured and unsecured. In secured debt consolidation, some asset is placed as collateral for the debt consolidation loan. If the borrower fails to repay the loan, then he or she stands to lose the collateral.

In unsecured debt consolidation, no asset is used as collateral. So there is no fear of the lender having any direct charge on the borrower?s home in the event of non-payment of the consolidation loan. Here, if repayments are not made, the borrower has the privilege of re-negotiating the repayment with the lender. There is no fear of the collateral being lost through non-repayment of the unsecured debt consolidation loan. However, the interest rates of these consolidation loans are usually on the higher side.

One of the advantages of an unsecured debt consolidation loan is that since there is no property valuation involved in sanctioning the loan, these loans are approved faster. This saving in time also saves in any debts that may keep on adding through its interest. However, to get an unsecured debt consolidation loan, it is important that the borrower be clean on the credit front as the credit history helps the lender determine the credibility of the borrower. This is because the loan providers may fear sanctioning loans to borrowers with a bad credit history, and with no collateral pledged.

However, this does not mean that a person with bad credit will be rejected an unsecured debt consolidation loan. Nowadays, there are many loan providers who are willing to take a risk with lending money to people with bad credit. This is because they now believe that bad credit is not an absolute indicator of credibility.

One of the disadvantages of an unsecured debt consolidation loan is that the borrower cannot draw as large an amount as the secured debt consolidation loans. This is so as to cover the risk of giving a loan without any collateral. However, if the lender has enough faith in the borrower, then there is a chance of him loaning him a greater amount in the unsecured debt consolidation loan.

The specialty of an unsecured debt consolidation loan or any debt consolidation loan is that the loan provider actually designates experts who work along with them to eliminate debts. Here the borrowers only have the task of performing the debt settlement process. They have to provide information of the various debts they want settled; this has to include all big and small debts. The reason all the small debts have to be included is that the borrowed amount does not increase much with its inclusion, and these small debts add up to a big amount with its interest.

Once the information of the debts is provided to the loan provider, then their trained representatives will handle the several creditors of the borrower. This is a relief to the borrower, after all that haggling with the creditors. Good representatives can in fact bring down the repayable amount and thus save on the unsecured debt consolidation loan.
