Charity has anti-badger cull walk

A Somerset wildlife charity has called on its supporters to join a protest walk in opposition to the planned cull of badgers in West Somerset.

Secret World has organised the event in Dunster in the hope that hundreds will turn out to oppose the cull.

Charity founder, Pauline Kidner, said: "We don't underestimate the problem TB has for farmers but culling badgers is not the answer."

The group favours vaccination. Farmers say badgers spread tuberculosis.

The walk is set to begin at 18:00 BST in Dunster.

Protesters claim the pilots in Somerset and Gloucestershire are too small to provide useful data and risk becoming "a costly distraction".

They also believe vaccinating badgers would be a more effective long term solution.

Defra has said the action is necessary to protect cattle from bovine TB.

The government said that last year 26,000 cattle in England had to be slaughtered after contracting the disease.
