Article by Gary Houston
I find this a big topic with a lot of new horse owners and those thinking of becoming horse owners. Most experienced horse people will discourage doing this if you are new to horses, and with good reason. Though I won?t say its impossible either as I am one that was green & purchased learned how to train green horse, but I had a great teacher. Well if this is you and you want to in devour in the world of horse training and horsemanship. Then this article should be of some help to you.
Well I?ll explain to you what I did starting out. The very first thing I did was go to the nearest book store & purchased 5 to 6 books to read. Everything from horse health care, stall cleaning, horseback riding, techniques and anything else that had to do with horsemanship for beginners. I read all the books I purchased & also watched a few videos. I recommend buying yourself some natural horsemanship videos, you can find them all over the internet. After doing much research I went and searched for someone that trained horses for a living. I felt I was ready and confident enough to take on the task of actually getting my hands dirty and doing some of the things I read about and watched on video.
So I found a place at a boarding stable and ended up working a deal where I would work cleaning some stalls and the trainer would teach me how to train. This was great and worked out because I actually wanted to learn how to clean stalls first. Bet I?m getting a lot of frowns like huh! Yeah well my theory is how am I going to learn about the behaviors of horses, what better way to study them will cleaning stalls. The riding part to me is just the icing on the cake, but you gotta have the cake to put the icing on. Which means you better know how to work with your horse, understand your horse and its good and bad habits while it?s on the ground because once you get in that saddle it?s a whole new ball game. So then I had a chance to work with a few horses that were at the stable for training and about a month later I decided to purchase myself a horse, by this time of working with some horses I knew what kind and caliber of horse I wanted for myself. I also had better idea of what I was up against. So I purchased a young year and a half yearling colt. I don?t suggest you go out and do this but it is not impossible if you have prepared yourself first. Well to make a long story short my horse is now trained and can do everything.
So I say to you beginners gather as much information as you can and prepare yourself, before you just go out and purchase a horse without any formal knowledge and think your going to train it.
